New Zealand is a country in it's own right, about 3 hours flight south east of Brisbane, It has a north and a south island. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland.

I probably asked whether New Zealand was part of Australia. When I was 7 or 8 years old. But check out some of the questions on this site - someone tonight wanted to know where Japan and Korea were, the other day someone wanted to know if it was summer in the USA, what was the season in Ireland.
They can use a computer. But how can they not know that?

By the way, the spell checker always wants to make Zealand into Zea-land or Zea Land.

That is a pretty sweeping generalization. I am American and have visited NZ twice, and never assumed or thought that it was part of Australia.

If folks have that misconception it is probably because OZ and NZ are tucked together on the bottom side of most globes and that both countries are/were part of the British Commonwealth and references to ANZAC forces involved in world conflicts and peacekeepping missions.

I don't think this!
We (Australia) are one country and New Zealand is also a country, in it's own right.
