Keep in mind that PowerPoint itself does not handle video files. It turns them over to 3rd party applications (QuickTime on the Mac, some off-beat one on Windows).
If you're on a Mac, know that QuickTime, iMovie, Final Cut and iDVD are all HD capable. They can handle all your HD video and editing needs. Use PowerPoint's Save As Movie feature to turn your presentation into .mov format. Use Save As > PowerPoint package to create a deliverable folder of your presentation.
