i m surprised why many people did not reply to this wonderful question

anyhow it is very important to know and understand Shiva's possessions to understand Shiva-Tattwa. Snake, trident, third eye, hair-lock, ganga coming out, lion's skin, bull all are beautiful iconifications of great truth about Shiva Tattawa.

A crescent moon is shown on shiva's head has these basic reasons

1- When Halahal poison was churned out, and no body was ready to take it...and the whole universe started burning with its poison, Shiva accepted the poison to save the world....drank it and kept the poison in his throat and his throat became blue...hence shiva is also called Neelkanthh. To cool the burning effects of poison, shiva kept moon which is supposed to give cool light on his head..

2- As per vedic astrology moon is called mother of planets. Shiva, for creation of the universe gives importance to the mother aspect... this is shown by moon

3- As per Tantra philosophy, a crescent moon, shown on shiva's head is 1/16th or the last portion of Moon...as moon has 16 kalaas.

The moon in 16th portion (or kalaa) here denotes that there are 16 kalaas in the universe, 15 kalaas are spread in the universe, but the sixteenth kalaa, the Turiya Kalaa, or the excellence or the God tattawa is with shiva only.

Hope i did not complicate !!

It has to with death and Shiva being the lord of death. Of course, death in Hindu thought is not so bad, its more of "restart" or one step closer to "freedom" if you live a good life in the most recent round of transmigration. So, is the moon growing to full moon status, or shrinking to new moon status...the choice is yours in this illusion of life.

In oder to counteract the negative effect of the Halahala (Kalakuta) poison which He drank at the time of the churning of the Ocean of Milk. He did this to save the world.
