Is the slingshot move that Ricky and Cal do actually possible. What would have to happen for it to be successful, why would it be successful.

For those who haven't seen the movie A driver in second allows the driver in third to draft of him, then he driver in third passes both drivers.

At Talladega and Daytona the draft is key, makes 3 cars in a row faster than any one car itself. What makes this happen is the car in the front is the one pushing the air and is getting the resistance from it and taking it away from the follower.acting as a wind breaker, and as a vaccum pulling the cars to it. Now when the cars behind the leader pull out and go, they get that extra throttle power which in turn slingshots the cars around as the front car lost his push and slows some.
This may not help you understand it more, plus I probably should have not answered it just coming in from the Bar.. If it does explain the effect to you a little bit, then maybe your question is somewhat answered?

You bet slingshotting works. Junior Johnson is given credit for figuring out how to use the draft way back in the 50's. However... slingshotting actually refers to a single car taking advantage of the draft of the car in front of him then, after building momentum, sliding out to make the pass. The scenario you're talking about is just simple drafting. Two cars "sucked up" to each other with the lead car breaking the air for both are faster than a single car alone.

Basically, yes. That is why cars travel bumper to bumper in long packs at plate tracks. The group can travel through the air better than a single car alone. The wake of air the following cars travel in has been disturbured so the 3rd car needs to use less power. If timed right, Yes you can pull a slingshot move. Last year that is how Brian Vickers won his first win.

I think you'd need a lot more than a bit of 'draft' to actually pass professional race cars; that's probably why this theory has only been attempted, mentioned, or even heard of in a funny movie.

Very interesting question, though. I never caught what the slingshot was when I saw the movie; I'm glad you explained that!

Pretty good for just coming from the bar Brent.
The sling shot really worked good pre- restricter plate. The drivers would drop back and then suck up and scoot right on by the person in front of them. If there was always a restricter plate there wouldn't be the term used in NASCAR racing just draft.

it use to be possible but not with restrictor plates a car would drop back from the lead car a little bit then he would give it all the gas he can get and it would be pulled along by the draft up to the lead car which means its actually going faster then the lead car then he would shoot to the outside and his momentum would let him pass the lead car

The sling shot manuver can be done this way.
There have been several drivers that have done it and several credited with starting it.
Most noteworthy are Junior Johnson,Dale Earnhardt Senior,Darell Waltrip,Terry Labonte
