It depends on his reading skills and of course his interests. Captain Underpants is very popular with the 6-8 year old boys. Anything involving spiderman, batman, superman, fantastic 4 are popular.
If you are planning on purchasing a book for this boy, I would recommend either buying him a gift certificate, or taking him to the bookstore with you and letting him pick something on his own. The reading skills between the ages of 5-8 can be so diverse that you don't want to embarass him and get him something that's either too easy or too difficult.

Is there some big change in his life? Before you get too frustrated take a step back and look at what is going on. When children have big changes they sometimes regress to an earlier stage. I assume that he didn't use to whine. He might also be getting his 6 year molars. Some people have different tolerances to pain. I do think that you are doing the right thing by not feeding into it. It will probably take a little longer for him to stop since he was be comforted(positive reinforcement) in the beginning. It will probably go away after he learns it doesn't work, but I would keep my eyes open for anything that may be stressing him that he may not be able to cope with just in case.

There's still nothing wrong with the old fairy tales and folk tales from various countries - they are timeless for children of that age -
http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/fairytales/
Of course many modern authors are fine too before they get older and teachers and librarians try to prematurely push "issues" books onto them - let them enjoy the magic of childhood and use their own imaginations for as long as possible - mind you some of the Fairy Tales can be pretty gruesome but many (not all by all means) boys (and some girls too if I am anything to go by as a child) like that!
Best wishes,
Joan.

The Froggy books are great. My daughter is reading Hooked on Phonics books. Scholastic has some great first reader books. Also, A Beka books have great books and stories for that age group. Good luck!
