when i first got her on may 23, she was 4 months old and about 2.5 llbs. Then in the middle of june, we took her to the vet and she was 3 llbs. And i just weighed her and she's now officially 4llbs. Is she growing way too fast for a purebred chihuahua? Should i switch her to adult dog food instead, so there's less fat? She's grown bigger too, not just fatter.

No, Chihuahuas are funny like that. They can actually weigh more as puppies than as adults. She needs premium quality puppy food to do her best, or an all stages food such as Canidae. Chihuahuas, as small as they are, do have several bone/joint problems, so optimum nutrition is the safest way to go, so that she builds healthy bones and joints. She will lose her baby fat as she matures.
It sounds like she is doing just great.

I raised Chihuahuas for many years, in the 1960's-70's.

At six months of age she is pretty close to being full grown. Small breed dogs mature quicker than larger ones. She can be switched to adult food within the next month or two. Feeding her adult food instead of puppy won't stop her from growing. She may be just be a larger size. Not all chihuahuas are tiny. If her parents are large she will probably be large too. I have seen some as big as 15lbs. Just be sure to feed her a good quality food.

There is no guarantee on what size your dog will end up,
the breeders can tell you that the parent dogs were 4 pounds
or whatever, but sometimes the puppies are larger than
their parents. My chi's parents were under 6 pounds, but
my dog kept growing and ended up 10 pounds. I talked
to the breeder and they said sometimes there is a
throwback, that some puppies end up bigger, like the
chihuahuas were before they started to breed them smaller
and smaller. The size isn't that important, what's more
important is that your dog is healthy. The smaller the dog,
the more health problems there can be...my dog has few
of the problems smaller dogs have, in fact my vet says
my chi is the healthiest one they see.
Keep feeding the puppy food until your dog is a yeat
old, just make sure that you aren't giving too much food
at one time. My dog, who is full grown gets about 10-12
kibbles with 1 teaspoon of cottage cheese for her
breakfast and 1/4 cup kibble with 2 teaspoons of chicken
soup (that I make for her with brown rice, broth, chicken
and raw sliced carrots) She gets 1 dog biscuit for a treat
just before bed, I buy the tiny ones that are about 1 inch
long. She loves the dog park and loves hiking, she has
a lot of stamina and a lot of attitude. Chihuahua's are the
best....enjoy your baby.

Puppies NEED puppy food! There are different nutrients in it that adult dogs don't need. Please continue to feed puppy chow until it is over a year old. Also consult your vet.
Chihuahuas come in all sizes from just ounces when they were born up to approx 6 lbs. There have been some that have grown beyond that but they may have genes down the line that maybe weren't purebred.
Does this make you love your baby pup any less?
I think not. Don't worry about it. At least it's healthy.
Also exercise it daily to keep it fit.
Blessings to you and have fun with your chi. ;)

this sounds about right.
seh is gettting a growth spurt but she will probably matuere to be a 5-6 pound chihuahua.
She should be kept on Puppy food until seh is about 1 1/2 years old. This is when they stop growing

It doesn't sound like anything is abnormal. Maybe you just have a larger chihuahua. If the puppy looks like its getting fat then you might want to readjust how much you feed. But, most puppies will go through growth spurts where they gain a lot of weight, and it seems like its all at once. I wouldn't worry about it. Just be glad your puppy is healthy and growing.

Like kids, dogs grow rapidly when they are puppies. Her growth will eventually slow down and level out. Make sure you are feeding her food that is appropriate for her breed, size and age. Don't put her on adult dog food until she is at least 1 to 1 1/2 yrs.

i would not switch her to adult dog food until she is a year old. i dont know if you are feeding the puppy for small breeds food or not but that shouldnt matter. i wouldnt worry about it. she may just be a bigger chihuahua, but she is also now 6 mo. old.

just because she's purebred doenst mean she is going to be a tiny chi....as long as it doesnt seem like she is getting fat then Id continue just the way you are....she will not grow too big for a chi, she is a chi & she will grow to be the size she is genetically suppossed to be, bottom line.
