She needs to see a specialist such as a gastroenterologist or hepatologist. When someone's liver is not able to work properly, it can cause a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity, called ascites. She may need to be on a diuretic to help her get rid of the bloating, but sometimes it has to be drained in a hospital. She may also need to be on a low protein diet, but there is no way to tell on the internet. She needs lab tests, and other procedures by a specialist. If her liver is in decompensation (which would cause the bloating), then she needs strict medical care, because it may be a sign of liver failure. I hope you get her to a good gastro or hepatologist. Best wishes.

According to most professionals, a diet of liquid protien for six weeks will calm the swelling of the liver, although, it really depends on why the liver is so swollen. If they have eaten fatty foods, or have had lots of alcohol, it could be that there is permanent damage and should be diagnosed with blood tests to determine liver enzymes. A daily dose of brewers yeast, clear clean water and fat free foods, no pepper, or spice or starch and exercise to keep the toxins flowing out.

I recommend strongly that you take your friend to the drs for a complete checkup...

Exactly when & what medication caused this ,becoz these changes r genrally reversable & not lasting for years .Who diagnosed that it is a drug related problum ? May be this all bloting & liver enlargment may be apart of disease process like fatty liver or some storage disease of liver . Get a full checkup with a gestroentrologist with ultrasound & other liver function test to diagnose the condition. Bloting may be due to hyperacidity & GI disturbances .
