I decided to try to make my own wedding invitations because I just can't bring myself to pay hundreds of dollars for what is basically paper. I mean I figured the whole point of an invitation is just to get the word on time and stuff (and kind of set the tone). So I bought very nice quality textured paper, found a good font and the perfect color ink to match my wedding and printed them out. I think they look good. Then I started reading way too many bridal magazines and now Im worried that it's "not appropriate" to make your own invitations. Would you think an invitation that wasn't engraved or letterpress or calligraphy was cheap and stupid?

Do your own. That's great.

When I received invitations made by the family of the bride, I thought they were just great, because they were truly what the bride (and groom) wanted.

You had the right idea!

Did you like the invites before looking at bridal mags? If yes, then stick with it.

C'mon, you know that publications are all about marketing--especially bridal magazines.

You smart girl, you beat them at the game. Way to go!

You can definitely pull together some truly unique wedding invitations by doing it yourself, but be warned. Going the DIY route isn’t always very cost effective. If you are not a ‘crafty’ or computer savvy person, abandon ship immediately! Assuming you are computer savvy and crafty, head down to your favorite paper supply shop (Paper Zone or even a good craft store like JoAnne’s or Michaels). Find the paper you like that will work with the printer you have. There isn’t much point in working up a template before you know what size paper you are printing on! Once you have your paper, envelopes, embellishments and all that jazz, cut out some similarly sized ‘trial’ sheets on standard printer paper. Measure out how much of a margin you want and set those martins in MS Word. Input your invitation text and print out a copy. You’ll likely need to make some fine tuning adjustments after a few trial runs. The best advice I can give if you’re not a MS Word pro – find a friend who is and ask them to help. Most administrative professionals could whip up a template for you in a few minutes. Good luck!

We are making our own wedding invitations
We bought a pack of 50 invitations simple but nice

And my fiance' will be writing our own invitations with a poem for each other so it will be unique and different then other invitations our family and friends might recieve
Everyone that I have told about this think it is a great idea

The bridal magazines are basically for really high class weddings (not saying your isn't going to be) but for people that want to spend the $$$$$$ for everything
I hope you have a wonderful wedding and I am sure your invitations will look great

I made my own and they turned out great!

Go to wal mart and look in the wedding aisle. They should have a large selection of Wilton wedding invitations. Pick out your favorite, buy them, and then go here

http://www.wilton.com/printyourown/

They have a program on that site that sets it up for you (lines it up), has all different fonts and ways to word the invites...and all you have to do is add your name and other info..or quotes or whatever you want on there.

Make sure you have a printer that prints words well..and dark. Mine came out perfect, they look just as good as a friend who paid around $200 to have her invitations printed....and they only cost $15 and some ink!

I think its a very good, cost effective, idea. Don't listen to those stupid magazines!!! 4 issues ago, they probably had an article on how to make your own invitations! Its like the Good Housekeeping magazines that have all the great diets that works article on one page and a double chocolate fudge cake recipe on the next page! My mom made my invitations and they were beautiful and got lots of compliments!

Have fun and best wishes to you and your husband to be! :)

My sister-in-law (now happily married to my brother) did invitations individually made with two types of handmade Japanese paper and ribbon. They were gorgeous, and I guarantee the guests had never seen anything like these, and they did not look cheap in any way.

If you are good at crafts, go for it!

A word of caution: I made handmade invitations for my wedding. I bit off more than I could chew. It took me several agonizing weekends to finish the project. Although they looked nice in the end, I got to wishing that I had just bought invitations and saved myself the headache. Know your limitations.

Good luck, and congrats on your marriage!!!!

Bridal magazines are just different options that you have my husband and i made our own and we got many compliments on them this is your wedding and you need to make it all about you and what you like not about what others like! So i guess what i am saying is no i wouldn't think your invitation was cheap and stupid!

those magazines are just under pressure from the invitation company to say that crap. you go ahead and make your invitations! they will be more personal and will match your wedding better. why shell out all that cash for something you can do at home?! it is just an invitation after all, they are important, but they should not cause you to break the bank.

oh, i forgot to add that i also made my own :) no complaints here.

That's the problem with bridal magazines - they are out there to tout the products of their advertisers, but that's not the 'real' world.
There is NOTHING wrong with making your own invitations. I think the biggest thing you have to guard against in smudging! We have received some LOVELY wedding invitations which were made by the couples!

I made my own wedding invitations and everyone kept saying how beautiful they were. Besides it felt more like us ( my husband and I) We chose the colors, the wording, everything.

They won't look cheap. Add a ribbon and send em out. People really don't care about that. If people think you are cheap then you don't really need them there.
