He didn't want to force man to obey Him. He gave man a choice to obey or to disobey. Adam and Eve chose to listen to Satan, the great deceiver, and this caused sin to enter the world.
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned
We all sin. That is why God offers a way out through His Son Jesus.

The tree of knowledge of good and evil was part of God's plan. He knew what Adam and Eve would do. Adam and Eve were put here to bring forth the souls from heaven. Eve actually made a choice that shouldn't be looked upon as the ultimate sin but as a nobel sacrifice. Not to partake of the fruit and keep the garden to Adam and herself would have been selfish. The souls from heaven needed to come to earth to live and learn from the lessons taught on earth so they are more worthy to receive the blessings of being with God in heaven forever.

why focus on the tree of knowledge? The pride of humanity was not God's original design. Eve was easily fooled into thinking that she was somehow missing out. God gives her and Adam an absolutely breathtaking and perfect environment where everything lives in harmony, and all you can think about is why there was 1 thing that her and Adam weren't allowed to do? We're still making the same mistakes today. God gives us so much at our disposal and we ask Him why we can't have this and don't have that - greed will never be satisfied. Why can't humans want what they have when they have it? Also, so far as I remember one person was able to curse entirety of humanity - in the same way one person was able to reverse it as well. I'd say that's justice beyond what our incapable minds could ever think up.

That's a unique and funny way of looking at it. A Taser in a bay's room.
Well I choose to view it thusly:
God Created man, male and female created he him, in his own image. Man is the reflection of God in the sense that man maintains the same innate abilities, but on a smaller scale (like fractals). Therefore, man can manifest Creation just like God did. Man is God. So when Man made anything or did anything, it was Good. There was no such thing as Good and Evil. Whenever God made anything, it was Good. In order for Man to learn this, he had to experience it. It was not enough to know he was in the image, he had to know it...and the only way to know is to be what you know. So God tested them with a Tree of Good and Evil. The Kicker was that in the Day they eat of the fruit their eyes would be opened. This is what was used by Satan to get Eve to eat of the Fruit. She ate because it was appealing to her senses and because it would help her to rule. Then she gave it to adam (which, if she knew what she was doing since her eyes were open, she deceived adam intentionally) who ate too and in that instance you have the Verdict: Man does NOT know who he is. He does not know he is God and as such he falls out of Paradise..tumbling down to earth with a curse.
*All Fall Down*
Now, if you can make any sense out of what I just said, then you understand that the TREE was a Test for Eve, who failed and by default Adam fell (since they were one). The whole Point of the Story is: Either you remember the Innate God within you when dealing with the world around you, OR Be its Slave.
Now, insofar as History and Theology goes....I can't help you there.

Ha ha ha ha...
How else was that silly story going to bring temptation into paradise...LOL... I'm sure the issue of the why the tree was there at all isn't the only flaw you see in this story. There are plenty to pick from here and you'll find an additional harvest of over-ripened errors throughout the bible.
Don't sweat over the minor details of this or any of the bible stories.. their all ultimately nonsense. Just look for the message that's being sold and take the measure of its value.
This particular fable wants you to believe; first, that man was born into paradise and he was innocent because god is benevolent; and second, that it was one man's doing, (and not god's fault or desire,) that caused all men to be born into sin forever and ever thereafter. .... LOL... Yeah right...!?
Its just a heap of nonsense... Ignore it.

It was not the tree of knowledge, it was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
God intentionally created man with free will - what benefit is free will if there is never a choice to be made, never the opportunity to disobey?
Would you rather marry someone who loved you because they had no choice, or someone who loved you because they chose to give you their heart? Same concept. ;o)

after he cloned man and woman from the frozen embryos in his lab, he put a trigger that would make their intelligence actually work. so it was a trigger, and once they ate it, they could fend for themselves and god was afraid they'd mess up his eden lab and so he kicked them out and said, now u're on your own.
humans didnt understand and thought it was punishment, rather than emancipation/reaching maturity and have been trying to crawl back into that lab ever since.

there was no tree of knowledge. Knowledge was given to Adam in his brain with quest of more and more. That was a common fruit tree. God only order him not to taste. But his inner quest for more was feeling thirsty and furthermore Satan helped him in nourishing that idea.

He didn't.
He did however put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden.
