I want to buy a 15 or 17 inch laptop computer, and bring it with me during my airline travels; however, the salesman said that I can't have anything bigger then a 14 inch when carrying it on the plane. Is this true?

The salesman was incorrect.

Carry on can be no bigger than 45 linear inches (width plus height plus depth).

I travel with my 15 1/2 inch laptop and have never been told about a size restriction.
I think there are people flying with a 17 inch laptop too.

I think your salesman was trying to unload some old laptops onto you.

Its not true. I fly with my 17 inch laptop all the time and no one has ever hassled me with it. Just remember that your laptop counts a 1 carry-on piece.
