I wouldn't do it. Whenever you open the skin, you open yourself to the risk of infection. If something does go wrong, antibiotics aren't always safe for your baby. Talk to your tattoo artist also. If the artist and your dr both agree it's ok, I think you're safe. If it were me, I'd just wait until after the pregnancy. 6 months isn't that long to wait if it's something you really want.

I am pregnant, and there is no way I would get a tattoo right now...first off regardless of what your doctor says ( I would frankly get a second opinion) you are putting your baby under stress because tattoos tend to hurt a little...also the healing time is causing your body to kick into overdrive to heal the tattoo...which your body is already working in overtime because of your baby.. I would think it would just not be a good idea, plus God forbid you get some kind of infection (which I know is really really rare these days) or if your body rejects the ink or is allergic to a certain color that the artist may use...If it is worth possibly even a very small possibility of harming your baby then go for it...if not then wait trust me the time goes by super super fast when you are expecting..this last 7 months has been like a light year =) I would also repost this in the pregnancy forum a lot of nurses are on that one, and there may be some other pregnant women who have gotten tats while pregnant.

Speaking from the artist's point of view - no. People here are saying it is fine if you go to a clean, reputable studio. Well, if it is truly a clean, reputable studio - they would turn you down. It would also mean they carry insurance - (does anyone ever ask about this?) and the insurance company would forbid it most certainly.

Your doctor is a nut job, sorry. She certainly did not think this through. Oh wait....yeah, if something happens to the baby at all it can be blamed on the tattoo artist - she will be off the hook. We don't take unnecessary chances - either should you. Just wait it out. No tattoo is an emergency.

i completely agree with nicole b. along with everything she said, there are pressure points in the body that cause reactions in other places. i know they do acupuncture on pregnant women sometimes to relieve pain and sometimes to bring on labor. unless you and the artist know a lot about these things, i wouldn't do it. better safe than sorry. plus, the first 3 months of pregnance have the best chance for miscarriage and can be caused by anything without warning. why not wait to get the tattoo? nothing says you have to have it now and after you give birth, you may want something else to represent the baby.

I think that if you want to know if a tattoo artist will give you one while pregnant you should talk to several and see what they say. If they say no, ask why since your doctor says it is okay. Be sure to let them know that you are pregnant and not just asking hypothetically. Congrats on the baby!

There is always a risk of getting hepatitis from the needles.

It seems like you are aware of your responsibility to your unborn child and that is such a wonderful growth that we are priveleged to witness in here . Otherwise, you would just have gone and did it. Instead you are asking.

The doctor may not always tell you the risks involved, she will answer as scientifically as she can. If you develop a disease, she can always tell you, well my dear the choice of where you get this tattoo from was yours in the first place.

Decide with your heart.

most artist will not tat you while you are pregnant. for the sake of the baby wait until the baby is born. you could risk getting an infection or worse a disease that is not curable. and while prego the skin tends to stretch. i would wait a month or so after the baby is born so that the skin is back to its normal and not stretched or anything

I am very surprised that your doctor said that is ok. There are several risks that can happen if you get a tattoo when pregnant. It is so much better to be patient for the baby's sake.
