Is your hair really wet when you put in your products? If it is all you are doing is diluting the gel and that makes it droop. Make sure you hair is only damp when you put in the gel and get American Crew firm hold gel it works great or their spray gel and blow dry it up so it gets spiky. That is what we use in the salon to do flat tops, so you know it has to make anyone's hair stand up. Good luck!

you need a better GEL, there are some that are super stiff. You need to spend a little more $$ on the product - yes it makes a difference especially if you have tough hair that it sounds like you do.
Buy some of Redken's Strongest GEL........ go to your local Beauty Supply and ask for that exact thing I cannot remember the exact name just say that.
then if that still isn't enough buy some Sebastian Hair spray Strong Super Shaper and put that on top....

when I was in cosmetology school we were taught that we have the hair we were born with, of course as we get elderly everyone's thins out, but I have lots of fine hair and so I asked the same question as you did. I was told that "nothing" will make it thicker but you can use a blunt cut to make your hair act thicker, there are jels and sprays especially made to make "fat" hair, and you can use hair extensions and wigs. If you're relaly talking about thin hair and not fine hair then perhaps there are plugs that you can have added on your scalp (but that's costly because it's done by one folicle at a time). President Regan had that (the plugs) done.

how long is the hair? try gel+hair spray, and when you put the spray on lightly blowdry it to stiffen it up.

Make sure your hair is a little damp before spiking it. dont wet it afterwards it will just get crappy

the gels and sprays have different hold's get "firm" or whatever is strongest

Try a brand of gel called "Bed-Head". That stuff works like concrete.
