I have read conflicting articles saying it is or isn't traditional for the bride and groom to exchange gifts. We will be exchanging gifts regardless. I decided on my own, and will not change my mind, that I want the gift to become an heirloom. I only have $100-200 to spend on the gift. Yes, I would like to spend more, but circumstances (long story) won't allow it right now.

Get her a locket with your last inital engraved on the front and your wedding date on the back. Tell her that inside she can keep all the pictures of the babies and grandbabies you are to have someday close to her heart. (I am assuming that you are having children if you are giving her something to pass down to future generations.) Children are great legacies of the love we have for our spouses. :)

A cultured pearl 16 inch necklace which she can hand down to her daughter one day. $200 bucks should get you a lovely necklace. Go on line and do a search: cultured pearl necklaces or go online to fortunoffs.com. See what the prices are. Also try ebay.com with a reputable jeweler that has a money back guarantee or a discount jewelry store in your area. Don't go to the mall, like Zales or any other as you will get ripped off. Good luck to you

Hand mirrors, with matching brush set, actually you can get these as a pre heirloom! lol speaking of preheairlooms, why not just give her something from your childhood, or family? it'll mean alot more than some nameless, facless gift you got from JC Penny's. Otherwise: tea sets, amish made rocking chair, curio cabinets, flapper belt, silver hair barret, picnic basket (with a picnic inside hehe), dream catcher, pretty much any toys left in the box become valuable, hand carved chess sets, ect. hope it helps

As much as I love tradition. Just as much I love the idea of the two of you exchanging gifts. Some ideas are, a pair of earrings, something wind up that plays music, a watch engraved on the inside, a locket and chain.
Best Wishes.

if you are thinking of an heirloom then it needs to be something that will not lose value overtime. i wld vote for the pearls b/c you can get a good quality pearl necklace for under $200. if she is not a pearls type of girl then get her a gold locket or an engraved jewelry box.

congrats! it sounds like you'll be a wonderful and thoughtful husband.

Go to SAM´s Club, and buy her some pearl earrings. My Dad and Stepmom did this for me because my husband to be didn´t know about this tradition, and they bought me a gold and pearl pair for, you´re gonna love this, $50 tops.

The other day, I had an important meeting with a German authority, and I wore these earrings with my dress (my husband and I married this past May), and I felt so good wearing something that I will own for years, and God willing, pass down to our children.

If you are not absolutely sure she will like what you choose, sometimes it´s fun to let the woman choose her own-make a big deal out of it and take her somewhere nice for dinner afterwards-not the Sam´s Club snack bar, but somewhere else:)

I love a 7 carat lemon quartz "statement ring" that I just bought for myself. I paid a little over $200 for it, but it is such a beautiful cocktail ring.

It wasn't too expensive, but it is definitely heirloom quality, and it really makes me feel special when I dress up.

Some other ideas:

A beautiful sterling silver bowl--have it engraved with a sweet message

A small painting

Something from Tiffany and Co.--maybe a little pair of white gold earrings

I noticed a "thumbs down" on all of the answers so far. Was that from you? They are all perfectly fine suggestions, but maybe not what you are looking for....

Think about what SHE likes. Does she collect dolls or figurines? Is she really into photographs... picture frames... photo album...

Do you want it to be functional, like furniture of some sort, like a coffee table, night stand or coat rack...

Is she a TV/movie junkie? Some sort of related memorabilia.

Do you have a special place? Maybe something from the first place you went on a date, the place you met.... A seashell from a beach where you took your first walk, or if you met in high school, maybe a HS jacket.

Make it something that is meaningful to her ... or better yet to BOTH of you, that speaks of your relationship.

if you want an heirloom try a locket necklace
that you can put a pic of you 2 on your wedding day on one side when you get them back from the photographer... then add a pic of first born on other side. have it engraved.

One traditional gift that I think is lovely is a dressing set. This is a silver brush, mirror, etc. set for a dressing table. Have it engraved with her married initials. My wedding gift from my husband was his mother's dressing set with my initials added to it. For an idea of what I'm talking about see http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/181242-A-matched-dressing-table-set-BIRMINGHAM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ28272QQihZ018QQitemZ280130610533QQrdZ1
