When I turn my TV on channel 4, it plays what would normally show up on channel 3, but with no sound. This is really only the start of my problem.

None of the other channels will play anything. THIS IS NORMAL.

My television isn't plugged into cable or anything. In fact, the only think plugged into my TV is the power cord... How can I get channels coming through if all I should be able to do is turn on my tv?

You NEED an RF signal source....whether it's a tabletop antenna (UHF) or a Cable box (Vhf -channel 3) or a Satellite box (Vhf- channel 3)

Without it, you get NOTHING....those connectors are so well shielded it can't just pull a signal out of thin air....

But, the channel 3 signal can appear on channel 4 IF your source is near it....
It just doesn't give you SOUND because you're on the wrong channel.....

Buy a $3.00 antenna wire at Walmart or any hardware/lumber store...they're everywhere.

If you are receiving input without the cable cord plugged in, than you are most likely receiving it from your antenna.
