That is a very good question, I hope I can give you an answer that is acceptable.
Humans are very much capable of individual thought, however they appear to make bad use of it. By asking this question I am assuming you used your individual thought.
The fear of being alone is not exclusive to believers or non-believers, it is universal. Whether a person is an atheist, Muslim, Christian, Jew or practice Scientology, loneliness is clearly an individual thought.
Humans first of all don't evolve in the sense of changing from one form to another form constantly. Our human DNA will not allow that to happen.
A social structure is a system of the time regardless of when the time is.
One death is better then two, it is better to be safe than sorry.

I am! Back in junior high, I found that the people who will judge you for your individual thought, wouldn't like you anyway even if you agreed with them. Trus me. I tried. I just couldn't make the cut being one of them. So, I went back to being me.
I've been happy doing that ever since. However, sometimes, I really do feel like noone else understands me and I wonder why I'm still here and God hasn't taken me. at those times it seems like I just don't belong here. But I know that it is something that I must experience.
Hey! Just a suggestion. Ask some of these questions in a blog and see which of your frineds answer and what they say. Not to mention, it will not be closed to answers after so many days. I love commenting on blogs. I think these questions would be perfect for a blog. they are so thought provoking.
Have a good night Sean. ;)

I think that I am capable of thinking for myself and always have been. I am a disbeliever, thus not accepting of religious doctrine. I was exposed to Christianity in my childhood and teenage years, but always questioned it, including the existence of god. I currently reject organized religion in all of its forms. Being open-minded has been a goal of mine throughout my life. I do not dismiss completely the concept of a Creator or deity and consider myself an agnostic, but I definitely subscribe to the scientific theories of evolution and the origins of the universe, yet I am also not beyond considering that they might be the methods of a Creator. And, being a writer, I relish being alone with my thoughts, a situation which I have enjoyed for many years. I have produced for myself a world of the imagination and find it irresistible...

WHY do you say we're not capable of individual thoughts? You totally lost me there. Just reading all the answers on here shows individual thought. Then to have people shoot down your individual thought, that surely shows openmindedness doesn't it?! That could be holding some back; the fear of ridicule. But on the whole I'd say there are a lot of intelligent people around (esp. here) with their own thoughts they publicly display for us all to read.

Einstein probably had that same thought when he DISGAURDED the concept of an EXPANDING universe in his math and favored STEADY STATE, because it was commonly accepted. He called that his BIGGEST MISTAKE
He should have GONE with his GUT and his MIND and HIS VISION, instead he let PEER pressure get the best of him!

Where ever there is an independent thought, there needs to be other people to follow it. Otherwise nobody would ever hear about it. There would be no leaders if there weren't any followers. I get what you are saying though.

You asked, "Why aren't humans capable of individual thought"? -- you sound like an individual thinker to me so I guess humans ARE capable of it. (Unless you are a really smart monkey who knows how to type!) LOL.---I guess I'm not sure what your point is. Particularly the reference to dying? Blessings!

But humans have the one trait that no other species on the planet has, thought. We have the ability to change the way we think. It just takes courage. We may not be able to change the world, but we can sure change ourselves.

Being a social species, it is hardwired into our brains to want to bond with our social group. Relationships are based on having things in common, so we try to mold ourselves to be accepted.
There are those that have moved beyond this, and couldn't care less about what others think of them.
