one thing you can do is file for a bonded title. basically you post a bond for the value of the car, and the sheriffs department checks the vin, contacts the previous owners, etc. they essentially investigate the car as if it were stolen. if it is stolen they take the car and return it to the rightful owner. if not then the dmv will title the car in your name. i dont remember how long the bond is in effect for.

If the original title for a vehicle has been lost, the registered owner can apply for a duplicate title by following these steps:

Complete the Application for a Duplicate Title (MVR-4), in the presence of a notary. The application must be completed exactly the same as the original title was issued.

Furnish a $15.00 duplicate title fee.

If the original title has a lien on the vehicle, the lienholder must complete the bottom portion of MVR-4 in the presence of a notary or furnish a lien release

Go to a license place and ask about applying for a lost title. You should be able to get one if the title is clear. If not, you could have lost your money. When people sale cars without titles the titles are usually tied up with the bank or it wasn't their car to sale.

Go to your local congressman's office with the receipt and the vin number he should be able to help you. Although you might find out you bought a stolen car in either case you will not be in trouble. but might lose the car.
