Like others have said, you need to stop feeding him sweet stuff. It is very dangerous for your dog to be eating such concentrated amounts of sugar. Their bodies don't handle it like humans do. In fact, no offense, but I'm pretty surprised your dog isn't dead. Sweets and chocolate can kill a dog instantly.

To cut down on his weight, stop all the sweet treats IMMEDIATELY. No gradually cutting down, you need to stop it cold turkey. No matter how much he begs or how miserable he looks, you have to stop spoiling him this way. It is not only bad for his psychological state - he gets spoiled - but terribly dangerous for his physical health and I'm sorry to say this but you have probaby taken a few years off his life already.

Start feeding him regular dry dog food. There are diet foods you can feed him but those aren't necessary. Anything that's dry and made for dogs ONLY will do fine. Feed him HALF the regular amount that you would normally feed him. You're dieting him now. Feed him half the regular amount that you would normally feed him, and then for the rest of the amount, feed raw vegetables and fruit. It will fill up his stomach, so he doesn't feel hungry, without building on the calories.

Take him to the vet and make sure he hasn't developed any heart problems from being overweight. While you're at the vet you can work out a good exercise regime for him. The last thing you want is to be walking him every day and for him to get a heart attack halfway through it because of a cardio problem you didn't know about. Work out how often to walk him and how far, then stick to it.

Good luck.

Dont give him so many treats. Keep them for when he does somehting really good. Take him outside a lot and run around. Also, the amount of food you put in his dish, may be too much. He may be eating the food just cuz ts there. Not cuz he is hungry. I would take all the food out of the dish. And a few times a day, put some food into the dish, just enough to satisfy his hunger. Continue this for a few weeks until he gets it that he is only to eat if hungry. Then you can leave an open food dish Keep this up and you'll have a healthy dog in no time! Good luck!

Stop feeding your dog junkfood. Go to the store, get him/her a food that is for overweight dogs, and cut down on the amount he/she gets every day. Feed your dog just twice a day. There should be a chart on the bag telling you how much to give your dog depending on the size (height or type of dog) you have. Give the dog about 30 minutes to eat the food in the morning, then take it up. Don't offer more food until later in the evening. Leave water out all day. Your dog is better off being fed dry dog food than canned. Choose a good all natural dog food. Here's a website that will help in your choice. http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#commercial

He may be a bit "off his feed" for the first few days, but he'll be a healthier dog and with you longer. If you are going to change his dog food, do so gradually, substituting a little each time. I find Innova to be very good, especially for the price, but there are others out there to choose from.

FIRST get your dog to your vet for a check up, and discuss you plan for helping your dog slim down. Be sure this is okay for your dog, but I suggest replacing some of your dog's regular food with green beans or pumpkin. Your dog will be eating the same amount of food, but with less fat and calories. Also, the fiber in these foods will help your dog feel full. And/or there may be a food that would be better for your dog. Some dog foods are loaded with sugar, so read the ingredient lists closely. Rather than switching to a 'lite' food, you may just need to switch to a different food, and feed less of it. Again, talk with your vet. He or she will be glad to hear that you want to help your dog slim down! As you likely know, daschunds are prone to spinal problems, so they especially shouldn't carry extra weight.

And yes, again working with your vet, slowly increase your dog's activity level. As others have said: No sweets.

Good luck to you, and hats off to you for wanting to help your dog live a healthier life.

You have probably spoilt your dog by giving him the sweet stuff and now you have a problem and your doggy is becoming chubby.

Stop giving your dog sweet stuff and stick to giving him a balanced diet for now. If your really needing the help, call your local vet and ask i they would know of how to control this problem. They might put you onto someone who can assist in that area. But stop what your doing, your not helping but worsening the situation. Dont you want your dog to live a long healthy life?

Don't give your dog sweets - don't. You may think you are being kind, but dachshund who are fat often have disc problems and they become crippled ("go down").
You need to put your dachsie on a good quality, high proten (first ingredient meat), low fat food.
Canidae or Diamond make good dry foods, not corn as cheap fillers.
Walk your dachsie a couple of times a day and get him some exercise.
Stop the junk food and sweets - you are killing your poor dog.

I know dachshund make these sad eyes at you, but give him a little bit of raw carrot or string bean.
You can add canned pumpkin to his food, that is somewhat sweet, has fibre and is low calorie.

Good luck, but start getting your dachsie healthy pls.

No people food. NONE. Only a good dog food and in an amount that is appropriate for his age and size. More walkies, too. LOTS more walkies. You may want to take him/her to the vet. They will put your dog on a diet and will recommend food that will help them lose weight and give you good suggestions as well. Once his weight is down, maintain his weight carefully and NEVER give him people food. Most of the junk we eat isn't even good for US, let alone an animal! Good luck with your chubby pooch!

Daschunds already have several issues that are common like back problems. Therefore, it is important that they are at a healthy weight. Go to the vet and they will tell you a special diet and when he gets to his ideal weight you can get a maint. diet. No tablescraps!! It will be hard, but helps you and your pet in the long run.

Make sure he's on a good quality food. It should have a meat product as the first ingredient. Reduce the amount of food intake by 1/4. Stop feeding treats or limit to one small treat per day. Plenty of exercise. You should notice weight dropping in one week.

No human food - ever. Feed the amount of food recommended for your dog on the food package for its normal healthy weight twice a day and pick up anything uneaten after 15 minutes. Try and get the dog some exercise appropriate to its breed.
