There are many kinds or types of flint. It is available world wide but if you have any limestone creek banks near you, check in the water for large chunks. This will be a type of flint known as chert most likely( or Burlington chert, being almost all white).
Its great for starting fires but may have to be heat treated if you intend to make arrow points from it. I would go to flintknapper.com. The site is run by Larry Kinsella who is well know as a flint knapper, experimental archaeologist and is very knowledgeable about flints of all kinds.
There are a number of links from his site to places that sell flint. If you just want a traditional piece of flint and steel striker, you can get these from places like trackofthewolf.com.
Primitive fire starting is surprisingly simple and they sell a small booklet given some very good hints. With practice, you can probably get a better fire going in 30-40 seconds that a person using a match. Some of the sites will also be Primitive, black powder Rendezvous type sites also but you can learn skills from them that could conceivably keep you alive.
Good luck

If you want something commercial, look for a magnesium fire starter. All you need is a decent knife, and a pile of kindling. Simply shave off a bit of the magnesium, and on the other side will be a long rod of flint. once you have some magnesium flake, simply draw the knife (probably best not to use the blade) and a shower of sparks will ignite the magnesium, which will burn extremely hot (over 2000 degrees) and allow you to start the most stubborn kindling.
This whole thing will weigh a few ounces, and is approximately 3x5x 1/2". Any outdoor supply or sporting goods store will have them, as well as catalogue companies such as cabelas or bass pro shops. Price should be around six dollars.

You can buy Flint & Steel fire starting kits from CardinalGear.com..All you need then would be some tinder (Wood shavings or Steel Wool) The kits sell for about $11 plus shipping. These work great and are a lot of fun to use when you are camping!

Ebay.com and search on "strike force" in the sporting category.
On ebay, you can often get them for $5 plus shipping. In stores, $20.
It's the best flint fire starting system there is.

If they are still in business, Dixie gunworks in Unionville,TN. had them. Muzzle loading rifle assocation will be a good place to look. Any web site having to do with the fur trade era. Go to a gun show find a dealer with flintlock rifles. There was a co. called The old country store. I can't recall the first name but an outfit called Jamison from Indiana has them. Ask your local gun dealer.
