I get him to stop?

You've gotta train him not to. Whenever he jumps up on you, you should shove him off with your knee (not too agressively, but enough that he figures out he should stop) and say "down!". Also, try to have the other people do it too. Within a week or two he should stop jumping on people.

edit: I'm assuming you have a medium to large-sized dog and that it is jumping up as in putting its paws on your waist-chest area and trying to lick you or something.

He probably does it because he's excited to see the person and he gets attention that way. When company comes over, step outside first and explain you need their help training your dog not to jump. Tell them that when they come in they should greet you first (not the dog) and if the dog tries to jump on them, they should turn their back to the dog and ignore this unwanted behavior.

Telling the dog 'no' is still giving the dog attention so it sends a mixed message. Tell your guests to SAY NOTHING to the dog but instead use their body language to communicate that this behavior is unwanted. Also, if this happens when YOU come in the house. Do the same thing. Turn your back to the dog and IGNORE him untill he is calm. I know it sounds horrible, and it's really hard to do but hopefully you wont have to do it for too long.

Sounds like you may need some basic obedience training. If your dog learns simple commands such as sit and down thenthat's all you would have to say to get him to stop jumping- he would immediately obey you. It doesn't take too long but you have to be consistent, like you were dealing with a toddler. For another quick and probably easier fix, every time he starts to jump up, lift your knee to his chest to keep him off and tell him "no jumping" - don't hurt him, just deter him so he doesn't come into contact with you when he tries to jump up. Tell everyone who comes to your house to do this and soon he'll figure out that he can't get away with jumping anymore. Good luck

He does it because he is over excited and wants to see everyone, and no one ever taught him that this was unacceptable behavior. You need to teach him what to do instead of jumping up. First, put him on a leash and teach him to sit! Use positive reinforcements, like treats and praise to encourage him. Then practice walking up to the door and have him sit while people come in and out. Use the leash for control. Lots of practice and patience. He can't sit and jump at the same time!

Nudge them away with your knee, telling them "no" in a stern voice. (Don't tell them "down" because that's a separate command.) don't give them a lot of attention for jumping. Never encourage your dog to jump on you.

The best thing is to go to obedience class sponsored by your local dog training club, if you have one. It's a great way to teach your dog who's in charge and work on bad habits.

I'm not a dog club member, but my dog has improved tremendously through their classes.

A dog jumps because he wants attention and he wants to get up to your face. To keep your dog from jumping on you, squat down and pet him instead of petting him from above. A hand reaching down from above is an intimidating signal to a dog, but being stroked at eye level is calming and reassuring.

Along with that, when he does jump, push him down with your knee and reprimand him firmly. Let him know that he's not going to get any attention by jumping, and that he is only going to get his cuddle when you are squatted down on the ground at his eye level.

On Animal Planet, it said for you to tell your guests to turn their back and ignore the dog. It also said that a loud, short and sharp noise (made by you) would distract the dog. Saying "hey" shortly and sharply would be just fine. I've never tried this, but it definately did the trick on the dogs on TV!

Tell whoever is coming over to ignore the dog for a few min. if he does jump, turn your back on him. if he sits, pet him.
the jumping up is how dogs greet us...we have to train them to sit to be petted and not jump.

teach him how to sit and stay seated on command and whenever people come in the house, tell him to sit and stay until his nerves calm down.
