I agree with Morey and fhotoace. There are other reasons that someone might choose the 30D over the XTi, but image quality might not be the deciding factor. If you know the difference between using a spotmeter and not having one, that would be a reason to consider the 30D, for instance. Thousands of Canon Rebel buyers seem to make excellent photos without a spotmeter, though.

Click on the link that fhotoace has given you. Open a second copy of Internet Explorer and come back to your question on Yahoo! Answers and click on that link again. (You can also copy and paste the address from the first time you clicked...) You will not have two identical pages open in Internet Explorer. Click on "Our Samples Gallery" under the Rebel on one page and then flip over the other page and click on the samples under the 30D. Take your time and compare several images. You are contemplating how to spend upwards of $1,000, so I think it is well worth a couple of hours to do this. When you click on an image, look at the bottom and see what lens was used, as this is usually specified. Look for a similar image (a building outside vs. a building outside or a person inside vs. a person inside, etc.) under the other camera and click on it. See what the parameters are for that image. Now, click on the file name under the image to see the full sized file so you can really analyze it and make comparisons. Once the full sized image downloads, you will have to click on it to really see it full size.

If you are able to find similar photos, you will see that they are pretty much the same as far as overall quality.

Here's a close match...

Hey, you know what? Maybe my expecetations were wrong, since I think the 30D shot is the clear winner here. Okay, it's ISO 100 instead of 200 (like the XTi shot), but it is a lot sharper to me. Check a lot more shots, though, because it's YOUR money!

Note that the lens is an "L" series lens, which is Canon's better glass.

As others have said if image quality is your only concern, the price of the 30D isn't really justified. Cost-wise the xti is a great camera, especially for your first dSLR. I have used Canon SLRs for years and bought the xti when it first came out, and have since upgraded to the 30D though image quality was not a factor in that decision and I still use my xti occasionally when I want a lighter body. Having owned both cameras I can definitely say that there is little or no difference in the image quality. The best thing you can do to decide if it is worth the money for you to purchase the 30D is to look at spec. comparisons to decide which, if any of the features of the 30D are important for your use. I think if you are only thinking about image quality, your money would be best spent on the xti and using the difference to buy high quality lenses as the quality of the glass makes a much bigger difference in image quality than the camera in this case. Don't forget since all the EF mount lenses are interchangeable, if and when you do decide you want a more rugged bodied camera, you will already have quality lenses to use with it.

Yes.

In fact, you might get a hair better with the XTi. But, the 30d is more rugged, has more features- and can do 5 frames per second.

Both have top notch image quality- so that part really becomes irrelelavent. As you probably already know- it's not the camera that takes the photos, is the photographer.

If your key differentiator is image quality, then there's no reason to go with the 30D. Save your $ for lenses. You can always upgrade the body in the future.

If you want good IQ- just avoid the 18-55mm 'kit' lens.

If you have the money get the 30D. If you don't get the Rebel XTi. The difference in image quality is minimal if any. You do get better build quality from the 30D. Also it provides more features. But you can still take just as good pictures with the Rebel. The extra $$ saved will buy you a better lens which is the most important factor to the image quality between the two.
