Depends on your taste buds. If you don't like anything on the sour vinegar tasting side that don't get a dry wine. Most wines you hear about in here will be a little dry. If you like very sweet, thick wine, then you are looking at some " Desert" wines.

All wines when first fermented are "Dry". Adding sweetener is done later in the process.

While I like a number of what I call " Dinner " wines, I would only drink those with a meal. I prefer sweetness so if I were to drink wine as a cocktail or sitting around getting a little drunk, it would likely be a sweet wine.

Many dinner wines add to the meal. It's not that you cant get plenty drunk on Cabernet Sauvignon or Chianti, or any wine. It;s just that if I am planning on drinking for the alcohols sake, I'll go sweet.

There are so many kinds and everyone will have a different idea but your taste buds are all that matter.

I make my own wine and if you decided you want to try that , you can make any wine sweeter, just follow the recipes.

Very difficult to answer without more info about yourself. Do you like sour, sweet, dry???

White wines tend to be sour (like a green apple) red wines are astringent to the mouth (makes it rough &chalky feeling). Both are very good and can give lots of pleasure. It is a trial by error thing.

Sweet wines are good but take more of an education if you want to avoid trash wines.

You may also want to consider what you are eating /pairing it them with.

Hell just ask the retailer for advise a then try one.

If you can attend a tasting event it would be a big boost to your learning experience.

Enjoy

Try a Moscato or Late Harvest Riesling. Both have a higher level of residual sugar and less of a "wine" taste. Both are available for $10-$15.

You and your husband will need to know what you guys like in taste.

Usually for the first time drinker, I recommend for people to try white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc. These are generally slightly sweeter, but not overly sweet; fruity and floral but not overwhelming; not overly alcoholic in taste; not dry or acidic like some white wines; not tannic and bitter like some red wines. They are also more complex than white zinfandel. Once someone get used to these fun wines, then people can learn to try other wines, such as Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet, etc.

The Sauvignon Blanc of my choice is Caymus Conundrum $25, which is a wonderful wine blended with various white wine grapes, primarily Sauvignon Blanc based. Other ones that I like to recommend is Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc $18, and Duckhorn Ssauvignon Blanc $15.

Go to a wine bar and you may able to find various tasting, include flights of wine - they serve small portions of 3 or 4 wines for you to try. That is a good way to try as well.

I drink maybe twice a year at the most, so my husband recommended Tosti Asti. I love it! It's a sweet wine if you that stuff. It's the only wine I drink.

Try a white wine like pinor grigio or a riesling...they are generally a bit on the sweet side.

Asti Riccardonna! It's an Italian wine & it's out of this world. Trust me you'll both enjoy it.

Try Alamos Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. It is an exquisite and pretty affordable wine (10 dollars). It is medium bodied, spicy and a little sweet with oak notes.

Definitely an excellent choice.
