Baptism still means today in the Catholic Church exactly what it has meant from the time of the Apostles, and exactly what Jesus said it means. Truth never changes, and modern traditions of men have no place in the one Church Christ founded for all mankind. Baptism is, as it always was and always will be, the holy sacrament through which one is "born again" as a member of Christ's family, the Church, becoming a child of God, filled with grace for the first time, and thereby eligible for salvation.

Sprinkling is not a valid form of baptism. Catholic baptism is performed exactly as the apostles performed it, by pouring water three times on the head of the person being baptized, while reciting the Trinitarian formula commanded by Christ.

Baptism is the first Sacrament of Intitiation. It is the means by which a person becomes a member of the Catholic Church and a member of the Body of Christ. In Baptism, a person is united with the death and resurrection of jesus Christ, is absolved of original and personal sin and any temporal punishment of these sins, is made an adopted son or daughter of god the Father and also receives the gifts f the Holy Spirit of Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgement, Knowledge, Courage, Reverence, and Wonder and Awe.

I have never seen an infant sprinkled with water. Typically, water is poured over the forehead of an infant. To dunk an infant underwater may be traumatic and dangerous for an infant. Children and adults are dunked, if they wish to be.

In the Roman Catholic Church we believe that every person is born with "original sin" on their souls, from the sin of Adam and Eve. This sin needs to be washed away to free the person to be raised in a Christian lifestyle.

So we Baptize a child as soon as possible, to free them from the curse of the law, and there have been documented cases of babies that were dying, coming around and surviving because they were baptized.

For the child the parents and the godparents, this is a commitment of sorts, to raise the child in the Christian faith and to follow through with Christian teaching and to confirm the life of Christ in the child through the other sacraments as the child is ready in their spiritual life.

We feel this has codified what the early church experienced, they were baptized and joined the group of believers(entered into communion with them) and at some point through the laying on of hands they were baptized in the Holy Spirit(Confirmation).

The bible says repent and be baptised. How can an infant repent or chose Jesus and then publically proclaim his belief of Jesus. It is just getting wet in nice beautiful clothes according to traditions of man. So dedicate your children at church and when they are ready they will repent and be baptised and believe on their own free will.
