Why do people judge you when you want your skin lighter/whiter ...?

but don't judge those who want their skin darker? To the people that ask here on Yahoo! Answers how to have a whiter skin, people give answers like:
"Ask Michael Jackson"
"Go and see a psychiatrist"
"You should be happy with your skin color"
"Why would you do that"
"Don't be a racist"
"There's nothing wrong with being black" etc

But to those who ask about how to get a good suntan, or where can they find a good tanning bed or seeking for a good taning lotion people actually give good answers?

I'm happy with my skin color, and there's no reason why I should change it, but a friend of mine made this question a few weeks ago here on Yahoo! Answers, and she got really mean answers...

because a lot of people can't think well.
first off, a lot of people are followers and do as others do(tan)
secondly, many people aren't intelligent enough to figure out that people can look good with pale skin and that lots of models in magazines are pale
thirdly, many people have awful style(i mean, c'mon!! crocs?!)
A lot of people are judgamental and "shun" people who are "different".
personally, i love pale skin on myself, however, i feel that skin can be beautiful tan or pale!!! dark or light, skin can look incredible!!!
I can't stand the "ask Micheal Jackson" questions!
But when it comes down to it, once your friend is nice and pale and very classy and beautiful(if she uses it right), do you think people will think she's ugly?! nuh-uh sista!!!
once people see her looking sexy and pale, it really won't matter.

Silliness, I guess. The sun worshippers have to worry about looking like leather as they age, and getting skin cancer. On the other hand, chemical bleaching has it's own set of health problems, including the job being botched and looking awful, or having a bad reaction to the procedure. The best, and healthiest way to lighten up is to protect yourself from the sun as much as possible, with both sunblock and clothing. You'll gradually get as light as is possible for you, and your skin will age much better than folks on either side of the color shift trend.

Here in USA, it's just simply popular to get tan. And since getting tan is all the rage, people regard you as strange if you don't want to become tan- and even stranger if you wanna become pale. It's simply everyone's minds influenced by popular culture.
Like if you go to any asian country, you'll find people looking at you strangely if you want darker skin because paler skin is popular there.

tanning for Caucasians is a sign of not having to work for a living being able to lounge around the pool or lake
lightening the skin for a Black person is a sign that you are not proud of your Nationality

I can understand that ethic skin can sometimes have uneven skin tones, evening out one's skin tone and whitening one body is completely different

People say white girls that tan hate their race. I've heard people say that. They think they're being fake and want to be black.

Same with black girls who lighten their skin, they think they want to be white.
