Most guns are probably made in parts by machines and assembled by humans. Though it is entirely possible for a human to make the whole gun with a machine shop or at least parts of a machine shop.

They are mass produced by machine for the most part. However, there is alot of hand fitting that goes on to assure the gun is safe and operates properly.
Computer operated machining is pretty common nowadays. I attended the Smith and Wesson armorers school and it really lets you see why the cost of a gun is fairly high. My class did not machine or forge parts but we did assemble a number of firearms per person and then it is inspected twice.
The factory workers usually get paid by piece that is finished and passes inspection. If they have one that doesn't pass inspection, they have to fix it before they can be paid for another piece. Very skilled workers do very well.
Finishers ( polishing and bluing) are generally the most skilled and usually don't get to be a finisher until they are pretty close to retirement.

By machines and people.
The manufacture of firearms is no where near as mechnized as some other industries like auto and electronics.
It is possible to make guns at home with some machinist skills and common power equipment. Which is why the people who dream of outlawing guns are fools.

Most firearms are made in different pieces called "assemblies" and "sub-assemblies" depending on which term you prefer. The assemblies are typically contracted out to a company, another assembly (which is a different part of the firearm) is made by another and it goes on until all the assemblies are being made by someone. All of this is done almost completely by machine.
These assemblies are then assembled by hand on an assembly line to form a complete firearm. After they are sold, owners sometimes have hand made stocks and other accessories put on, the actual functioning parts are almost all machine made these days.

Both. generally the cheaper and more common the firearm is the more it is likely to be machine built.
For the most expensive types such as competition double shotguns and double rifles as they use in african hunting, they are completely hand made.

By machine. Even hand made firearms are typically composed of machined parts. The high pressures of firearms require exact precision that cannot usually be made by hand. Modern firearms are mass produced in factories entirely by machine, and could likely never be touched by human hands until it's off the assembly line.
