My dog has an aching leg and to make the pain go away my mother gave him half a tablet of advil. Now I'm worried because I've heard even a small dose can kill a dog. (My dog is a very small dog.) Is it ok for a dog to have advil. I'm very worried, I just finished yelling at my mother about how human medicine isn't ok and that she need prescribed dog medicine but she said "Noooooooo, it's only half a tablet!" Now what? If it is harmful what should I do?

Do NOT give dogs Advil, Tylenol, Aleve or any other meds of these types..they can be very toxic to dogs even in very small doses!!!!

NEVER give any type of pain releiver including asprin without checking with your vet first...

So many people have done serious harm even killed their pets because of self medication...we see it all the time at the vet hospital.

No no no! No Advil, No acetaminophen no nothing like that at all... You should continue to yell at your mom cause she should not be giving the dog anything.
Pain is a symptom of a problem.. You find the problem, and correct it and the pain goes away. If you give pain medication on your own, even the WRONG medication, then you remove the pain, and the dog runs around and next thing you know the problem is even worse. They are better off to feel the pain, and slow down until you can get it properly diagnosed...

NO, Ibuprofen is toxic to dog and cat livers, they cannot process it and flush it from their system, and they will be poisoned by it. If you're dog is in pain, take it to your vet and have the leg inspected, fixing the primary cause is always better than treating the symptoms.

I am a doctor, not a vet, but I will categorically tell you that you should never, ever give your dog advil, it will destroy the liver.

No, seek medical attention. Call your local emergency vet. Ibuprofen is dangerous to dogs.

Well after all these answers I hope your mom has her car keys and pocketbook in her hand and you have the dog wraped in a blanket and are off to the vets.

Good luck!
