So the conversation goes like this:

John: "I was thinking... (long pause).."
Me: "Did it hurt?"
John: "I think the reason why atheists don't believe in God, is because they really secretly DO believe in God, and they know how powerful He is, so they don't believe in him that way they don't have to FEAR Him.."
Me: "um....................... yeeeaaah. I'm gonna walk away now, bye."

What are you favorite theories on why you (or atheists in general) don't believe in God?

Possessed by Satan.

Believe it or not, I have had that one thrown at me more than once.

Edit:
Ah yes. The ever-wonderful "they just want to be able to do whatever they want without paying for it." (see below).

I'm sure my local law enforcement agency will give me a free pass once I let them know I'm an atheist.

i don't understand that we've been created by skill of extraterrestrial beings and that i don't understand that we've been motivated by skill of extraterrestrial beings. All i understand is there is a few loopy **** happening in the sky. different than for issues i've got seen with my very own eyes, and this grow to be earlier I ever used drugs or something, there are way too many debts no longer purely from the universal public yet severe score government officers to truly no longer ponder whether some thing is going on. i think of this is Brittan that surely has a documented case from the government obtainable to the universal public of an unidentified merchandise of their air area that moved in a fashion unexplainable to any technologies they understand of. France has a case that they denied and then later got here forward asserting there grow to be a flying saucers reported by skill of their militia. some human beings will circulate so a strategies as asserting that they are secret militia initiatives yet any government with those varieties of capability features would not shop some thing like that hidden, fairly because of the fact of ways wealthy it may lead them to. i don't understand that i could pay attention to what the heritage channel has to assert the two for the main section yet they do strengthen some exciting factors. yet maximum of what they say does have a objective and that objective is for leisure use purely.

I think the most ridiculous claim is that I'm an atheist because I just haven't HEARD enough about God. That's even stupider, that I haven't read up on religion. It's in these kinds of debates that I often find myself actually knowing way more details about the Bible than my opponent does.

Another ridiculous one was the one I've been hearing a lot today "You just don't want to follow the rules". As I said on another thread, this is like saying my only reason for not believing in Santa Claus is because it excuses me from having to leave out milk and cookies on Dec 24. We could likewise apply the same logic as a "reason" why Christians don't practice other religions of the world and their rules.

I think they don't believe in God because the mainstream definition of God being some omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being is just way over the top. Why's he got to be all that? Come up with a better understanding of what God or any god is and how He works and then the whole idea won't seem that farfetched.

As it stands, I can't blame them for not believing in some magical dude who uttered a few words and spake the universe into existence.

I answered a similar question yesterday with this answer:
1.) There is a complete lack of any empirical evidence to support the existence of any god, let alone the specific Christian god.
2.) Christian doctrine is so completely contrary to logic and reason (and often contrary to itself) that it's impossible for a rational, objective and intelligent person to take it seriously.

And may I suggest you talk to your facilities people about putting higher cubicle walls in place as an anti-John measure...?

I don't define myself by my non belief in YOUR particular god, but you can LABEL me an atheist if you wish.
I don't believe in YOUR god because for the same reasons I don't believe in the many other different gods invented by mankind over the millenia.

Your question presumes that YOUR god is the correct one to start with, so a logical explanation as to the history of religion and the state of current mainstream scientific understandings and principles is always going to elude you.

Don't pretend to have an open and curious mind, because you haven't..!!

Most christians secretly know that there is no god but they simply can't reverse their brainwashed minds because of their peers, and being a flock of sheep there is nothing to expect from them except their continuous ridiculing of the beliefs of others.
If there is god, christians wouldn't be so invective about those not in their religious clique.

There IS a contingent of the religious who just refuse to believe that we simply don't believe.

I've seen "Is it that you think humans are gods?" and similar things to.

"No, there is no one god; there are no many gods."

"Well, then, is it that...."

They just don't get it.

Yes, we all live in terror of hell, which we believe in; therefore we don't believe in god, which would enable us to avoid that hell we're terrified of. We refuse to admit we actually believe in god, because we know that not believing means we burn forever.

THAT makes sense!

But then, when you start with the premise, not only that god exists, but that everyone knows it, anything is possible.
