They must gain your consent for this.
However, it is VERY important to let the anaethetist know if you have been using any recreational drugs and prescription drugs/alcohol. These impact on the type of drugs they can give you during/after the operation. Also, some of these drugs can affect the type of pain relief you are given.

Eg. If you take ecstacy regularly you may have a life threatening reaction to one of the commonly used painkillers.

I work in the operating room. We are non judgemental about what you do with drugs and alcohol...we just need to know to keep you safe. Don't be embarassed it is something we hear every day.

Not normally. If your surgeon suspects that you may be full of illicit substances, he/she might order a drug screen, but it's not routine.

You DO want to tell your anesthesiologist and your surgeon EVERYTHING you've been taking - prescription meds, over the counter meds, herbal stuff, recreational drugs - EVERYTHING. Trust me, we've seen it all before.

Any of the substances I listed above can interact with the anesthetics or the post-operative medications, sometimes with severely bad results. If we know what you've taken and when, we can work around it.

Good luck.

Yes because they must know for sure if your system is clean, otherwise the procedure could be altered for the worse.

Ex: Anesthesia may not function properly due to illegal substances remaining inside your body; same goes with Alcohol.

They may, as they need to know what you may have in your system. Otherwise they could kill you, if they didn't know you has taken something and did not tell them!
