The name New Age was given in the 1980s by the American Media, to describe the alternative spiritual subculture interested in such things as meditation, channelling, reincarnation, crystals, psychic experience, holistic health, environmentalism, other fields associated with pseudoscience and anomalous phenomena, and various “unsolved mysteries” such as UFOs, Earth mysteries and Crop circles.

Basically it was a term to group all of the metaphysical thoughts and beliefs into a single subcultural definition.

The New age is not a religion at all. It is a complex and wide array of beliefs and practices followed by many different people. It is evolving and changing all the time and is not static like age old forms of religions. At it's core it is finding ones own spiritual path and journey to enlightenment through the vast expanse of some older religious beliefs, new age thought and metaphysics. New Agers tend to have a belief system which includes many, many different modes of thought and belief and no two will be exactly the same. In that sense it is a truly personalized form of belief and practice.

There's no such thing as a New Age religion per se.

New Age simply refers to the influx of Eastern religion and spirituality, that generally increased after the 1960's into the West.

It's a very broad area. It's not simply about wearing white flowing clothes from India, burning incense, while reading the Celestine Prophecy, but it encompasses that too.

NEW AGE SPIRITUALITY (a.k.a. Self-spirituality, New spirituality, Mind-body-spirit).

The New Age Movement is in a class by itself. Unlike most formal religions, it has no holy text, central organization, membership, formal clergy, geographic center, dogma, creed, etc. They often use mutually exclusive definitions for some of their terms. The New Age is in fact a free-flowing spiritual movement; a network of believers and practitioners who share somewhat similar beliefs and practices, which they add on to whichever formal religion that they follow.

New Age
adj.
Of or relating to a complex of spiritual and consciousness-raising movements originating in the 1980s and covering a range of themes from a belief in spiritualism and reincarnation to advocacy of holistic approaches to health and ecology.

1.) All humanity—indeed all life, everything in the universe—is spiritually interconnected, participating in the same energy. “God” is one name for this energy.

2.) There exists a mystical core within all religions, Eastern and Western. Dogma and religious identity are not so important.

3.) Science and spirituality are ultimately harmonious. New discoveries in science, e.g. evolution and quantum mechanics, when rightly understood, point to spiritual principles.

4.) This is a time of great transformation for the Earth and human consciousness.

Usually New Age refers to Wicca and similar religions. They're all different but have a basis in nature and some of the ancient religions of the celts, norse, greek and egyptian. Each one is different and each one will tell you something very different as the belief system. But that's the way it goes sometimes.

It is just the set of silly superstitions that have been around for centuries or millennia dressed up in chatter about "vibrations" and "energy" and sometimes "quantum effects" by people who have no idea (and no wish to know) what these terms mean to science.

I have a book on magic written in the 1830s and the stuff in it is no different to the drivel and hokum pushed by the new agers. Crystals, astrology, talismans, numerology, tarot, it's all there.

Pretty sure it has to do with being spiritually involved and at the same time working to understand the science of it all.
