It depends on the situation and target. A slap works well on hard targets where the risk of a broken hand is fairly high. A punch works well on soft targets where you need the hard surface of your knuckles to cause damage.

I'd say slaps can knock people out only if you happen to be a 300 pound Sumo wrestler. If not, then the worst you'll do is stun them long enough for you to follow up with a knockout punch.

Slaps can be effective if done correctly. There are many ways to use your hands when fighting & punching is among the least effective.

Are you beating up your girlfriend or your little brother.
Have you truly experienced this, it is a pretty bold statement to say that a slap can knock someone out quicker than a punch.
I would say your statement is completely false.

Slaps can be effective if done correctly. i like the back hand knife blade, and the palm strikes. and yes a back hand to the side of the neck can very easy knock you out, with little power behind it

The most pwerful and effective strike is always the one that gets in. In most cases a knockout blow is set up by a series of other attacks or techniques, the finishing move is not important, what is important is your ability to recognise and or create openings on your opponents guard and then to exploit them, this will result in your victory.

I like punches. If you are concerned about your hands maybe you should look into makiwara training to condition your hands.
