first of all, you should never buy something second hand for a wedding. so please do not listen to THAT poster.

second, 20 dollars is great, but buy a present. :) i mean, if it's off the registry, she will know it is 20 bucks, but a 20 dollar present looks so much better than a 20 in a card ( believe me i know). there are lots of things in the kitchen that are around the 20 dollar mark like strainers and Tupperware like items.

and it all how it is packaged. if it's done really creatively, it can look so beautiful on that present table.

We just got married a month and a half ago, and some of our favorite wedding gifts were not expensive ones, at all.

We had one couple get us a personalized brass door knocker for our new house.

We had another couple put together a gift basket with some of our favorite bottles of wine.

His aunt made us a beautiful home-made cross-stitched table cloth.

Really, even if you give cash, the most that you feel you can give, is plenty. Especially for a young couple starting out - especially if they are getting a house now or in the near future, it all helps out.

When you give your card, write something really thoughtful and personal in it - or even make a homemade one. When going through our gifts, the ones that left special messages or made homemade cards really stuck in our memories as special.

For $25 you can get a beautiful personalized frame from www.personalizationmall.com. The bride received one of these at the last shower I went to and it was a big hit. Everyone loved it and wished they had thought of it. You don't need to spend a lot to show that you were trying to make it personal.

We knew a couple that loved fish. For their wedding, we did a basket of a pot, oil, fish seasonings, different types of breader for the fish and a cookbook. All together it was less than $30 and my husband flounder gigs and we gave them fish that he had gigged so that all that they had to do was defrost the fish and they had a meal.

THEY LOVED IT.

Think of something that she likes. I collect birdhouses in my kitchen. I would LOVE a birdhouse that is homemade or even cheap. Any kind of birdhouse, because it means that you are thinking of ME when getting the gift.

Good luck and don't buy anymore than you can afford.

CASH is King!

I'm sure they would rather have the $$ to help pay off bills and wedding expenses rather than a gift card to bed bath n beyond for a blender they don't need.

Make sure you include a note that says 'please use as you wish!', otherwise people think they're supposed to get something 'homey' and write a thank u card for such n such.

Get a nice journal and then write something to her on the inside that is personal between the 2 of you or something about how proud of her you are then attach a picture of the two of you on the other side. That way she will be able to read your nice words each day when she writes about her day.
