Yes, I think most mormons these days only stay in the church because everyone they know is mormon, and it would look bad if they left.

"Do you think a lot of Mormons are just staying in it because their families and friends are in it and it's too hard to leave?"
All too true. The religion demands the support of all, and I can't tell you how many people I know have lied to get their temple recommends.
Try typing in "Lying for the Lord" in google, and see how many entries are NOT mormon related.
Not a good reference for a church.

It wasn't hard to physically stop going to church. What was hard was telling my friends (my family isn't LDS/Mormon). Telling my LDS/Mormon friends was a time for them to show their true colors, and some stopped all contact/friendship with me, while others said they didn't care because that's not what our friendship was based on in the first place.

Brainwashing, for one, cuses and strongholds will hold a person in the religion. Demonic oppression will hold you there, I am still going thru spiritual warfare sometimes I picked up from the church, it wasn't until I became wicca, I learned what the demons were called, but wicca doesn't tell you how to get rid of them, mainstream christianity is the only place I found how to truelly do a housecleaning and get rid of the curse and be truelly free from demonic opression and depression.

I left the church at a young age (16). It wasn't hard. What was hard was going back after not going for 20 years. I did grow up in an LDS home. I am staying because I know that what I hear there is the truth.

The LDS that I know do not live in areas with very many LDS members. In fact, they spend most of their week living with, working with and surrounded by non-LDS people. However, they *choose* to be LDS.
Do some people stay for cultural/social reasons? Probably. But many stay because it's what they believe to be true.

Yes, many of them are wonderful people (I'm related to some people in the LDS church). Another relative left the LDS religion when he divorced his wife. He basically lost visitation rights to his children until they were 18. So, I think that for a person who decides to leave the LDS church, they are taking a risk of being considered an apostate.

I share a different opinion of Mormons. I have not had a good relationship with them.
