at the fall of Adam and Eve because that was when they first brought sin into the world turning some of the original herbivores to carnivores. god didn't intend this from the start (he knew it was gonna happen don't fret...) but that's how it happened.

Put yourself in their place. I know where you are coming from and that is a great question. In order to sustain life there are two options depending on the classifications of the "eater". Carnivore (meat) or Vegetarian (grazer). Frankly, I don't have an answer other than a populist theory of evolution and survival of the fittest. In order to sustain life it seems that some life be it plant or animal must be consumed to sustain that life form at any given time. The sacrifice of one life form and the protein therein seems to be the only way other life forms can survive. This seems to be a "catch 22" where there is no real answer. If there could be some way where life could survive without consuming other life in the process, it might solve a human need for nourishment, but that would not help in a situation when predator and prey in the wild simply carry on the cycle of life. Who knows what the future holds? Perhaps at some time in our evolution we may not need our material bodies and become strictly spiritual beings that don't need material sustenance to sustain us?

I was speaking with my 5 year old niece about dinosaurs the other day after I watched a special on the Creation Museum. The exhibits in this 'museum' show that man lived with dinosaurs and that both were vegetarian, even the T Rex. So, there happened to be a toy T Rex on the table and I asked my niece what she thought the T Rex ate, plants or other dinosaurs? She replied, "Other dinosaurs." I said, "Really, how can you tell?" She looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "Because of his teeth, dummy!"
This is exactly what I have to say to creationists when they tell me to prove I'm right about creationism being wrong.
"Because of his teeth, dummy!!!!"

Pre-animal, sometime between ~850 and 600 mya during the multicellular stage... or at the very latest ~600-520 mya, by which time all major extant body plans had evolved.
For an awesome early one, try Googling < Anomalocaris >.
One Page: http://www.trilobites.info/anohome.html
For a more rounded look, Google < Burgess Shale > or pick up S.J. Gould's "Wonderful Life". ... And just in case you're interested, for a very early chordate (us), Google < Pikia >.

As soon as one was stronger than the other, billions of years ago. Do not believe the Creationism Museum. It is filled with misinformation and downright lies that have all be disproven by thousands of scientists worldwide.

except for a few photosynthetic sponges, no animals can harvest their own energy. whether they are eating plants or eating other animals, it's still energy. what makes you think there was any intention involved?
