Are restaurants still allowed to use MSG to enhance the flavor of food? I was at a chinese food restaurant the other day and it didn't agree with me. Yes, I know, it could have been a number of things but I'm thinking MSG may have been the culprit in this case. Anyone know if it's still used in restaurants?

Yeah, it's still perfectly legal. I know when I bought my restaurant there was this HUGE vat of MSG. I got rid of it. I realize it adds flavor, but that people are allergic to it. A responsible place won't use it. But you can get it anywhere. (God, that sounds like drugs or something!)

MSG is not illegal or banned for use. You can even buy it in the spice isles at most grocery stores. Most restaurants, especially Chinese restaurants (since they were the most notorious users of the seasoning), have stopped using it. A lot of Chinese restaurants will put 'No MSG' in their ads or on their menus, so I assume that means that some still use it. It never hurts to ask, or to call the restaurant you were at the other day to make sure.

Hope this helps.

Yup, Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is still used at restaurants as a flavor enhancer and is legal. It does give some people headaches and that is why alot of places try not to use it. However if you look on the back of most flavorful things (such as potato chips) you will find it as an ingredient. Make sure to ask if they use MSG next time.

Not only is it still used in restaurants, but you will find it in a large % of prepared foods. Look on the label of you favorite soup, pasta sauce, etc. and you will see it in the ingredients. They even sell it in the spice ailse so you can put it in your own recipes. MSG (monosodium glutamate) makes the taste buds "swell" so they can sense more flavor. Any time you are at a restaurant, you can request that your order NOT be seasoned with MSG. If it is an item that is prepared in advance (like soup or sauces) they may not be able to accomidate you.

MSG is allowed. My husband always gets a killer headache when he eats foods that have been prepared with it.

It is still used, it has never been outlawed. Just request No MSG next time.

It's definitely allowed . You would think that from a strictly good business perspective that it wouldn't be used anymore ,But it is.
