Yes!! We have to dogs - a Siberian Husky and a Cock-a-poo and the older they get it seems the more freaked out they get over sounds of lightning or especially bad during fireworks. This year I went to Pets Mart and bought some over the counter homeopathic pills called "quiet moments" - gave to both of the dogs this last 4th of July and for the first time they were fairly calm. Even my Husky -though he squeezed through the doggie door, at least laid down in the house without freaking out - Our neighbor trained her dogs to accept loud noises by giving them doggie treats when they were young, so they do not freak out at loud, sudden noises - they just expect a treat - Have a good weekend ......

We have 2 rat terriers and 2 labs and they are fine. You have to get them to focus on something besides the noise outside. The most important thing...do NOT baby talk them or talk in a high pitched voice with 'it's ok honey', 'it's a scary storm, I know', etc. That will make it worse the next time. You'll just be feeding their fear.
Instead perhaps play with them, give them a snack after a few minutes of playing to let them know that's better and more fun than shaking and crying during the storm. Good luck!
If they like to be kenneled, you could put them in the kennel then to help them feel 'safe.' Just an extra thought!

Yes when I had my Daschund Scottie not only was he afriad of thunder he was also afraid of gun shots. We also had a Boxer and another and one time we got some rough thundering here and Chance Lady and Scottie all 3 came running into the den and we had a time getting them to go back outside after the thunderstorm.

My dog goes crazy. She runs into the bathroom, jumps in the shower and tries to "dig" into the floor. So strange! I have heard that you should put a tight t-shirt on your dog if they freak during storms, apparently it comforts them. Not sure if it works, though

Some dogs are more affected by storms than others. I have had dogs that go hide under the covers every time there is a storm.

Alot of people end up tranquilizing their dogs...instead of that route, turn up the TV or radio a little, give them some extra loving..at night, even a box fan used as white noise can help "mask" the thunder a little so it's not so traumatizing to your dog.

Yes. And it is totally natural. All animals have really keen instinct when bad/potentially dangerous things happen in nature. Storms, thunder, lightening, etc. all ignite a flee/flight instinct and that is what happens in your dog!
