Recently my Lab has been afraid to go outside. This is very unusual for him. We literally have to force him outside to use the bathroom, etc. At first I thought it was the heat but now I am not so sure. PS..he does not go to the bathroom in the house - he will hold it.

i would just make him..try getting him distracted with something else and somehow lead him outside..or just put the leash on, don't say a word to him and go outside..don't coax him or anything..but once he gets outside give him a treat and praise him really big! i would do it several times in a row so he knows what he is doing is good..he obviously knows how to pee outside so that ins't the problem its just getting him out there..try the reppetition thing and see how that works..take him out, treat/praise, go back in..wait a few minutes, do it again! good luck

Go out with him and see if he shys away from a certain area of the yard. He probably heard or saw something that startled him. Could have been the recent fireworks as others have suggested or thunderstorms.

do you take him outside or do you let him go out and roam on his own? because if he usually goes outside on his own he probably had something scare him. my lab had a blue jay that lives in my backyard dive down and hit his back, so a bird, another animal, or a person might have scared your dog. i'd walk outside with him and see if there is a particular area that he shies away from. also if you're out there with him, he might be less afraid.

If this just started happening in the last few days, is it possible he hears fireworks? My dogs are terrifed of fireworks and I have to drag them outside and then talk to them constantly and reassure them that it's okay. Thankfully the 4th is over and everyone is almost out of firecrackers!

I would try to find out what happened to him, obviously he had a bad experience out there and that is why he is reluctant to go out. Go out with him and assure him it's OK
