I would go with a medium size not too small. chiuahuas are a really bad idea with adult dogs. I have one and german shephards. I have to keep them seperate. But if your current dog is really well behaved and tolerant of pups I guess anything would work. An australian shephard would be a good choice from the kid stand point. They make great kid dogs.

I have a question or two. Is your dog spayed? Does she get along with other dogs? My suggestion would get another female puppy and have it spayed as soon as possible. This will eliminate the possibility of breast cancer.
You want a family dog because of the kids? For a smaller dog I would suggest a Beagle, they love everyone and are great with other dogs.
If you can handle a little larger medium size I would go with an American Pit Bull terrier. They are so great with children. If raised from a puppy with your other dog they will part of the pack along with the rest of the family.
I have three dogs, a Chi/ Rat terrier that is 9 years old, a Beagle that is 5 and an APBT that is 4 and a half. They are all neutered and get along great. Of the three the best one with children is the Pit. She loves everyone and will jump on you to get attention, except kids. She just wiggles around them.
I have seen her lay on the floor next to my baby grandson for more than an hour. She would not live his side.
The APBT is the greatest family dog there is.

Some smaller dogs will do just fine with children, but I would not get a small breed. They can be too hyper, and small dogs tend to bite more, and are more likely to be injured by rough play with children.
If you want a smaller dog, a dog that is at least 15-20 pounds would be suitable around children. Adopting would be a great idea, a lot of rescue groups get to know the dogs temperement and if the dog's previous home had children. Also bring your dog to meet the new dog before you decide on purchasing him!

Golden Retrievers are wonderful family pets. They can be large or medium. They are easy to train and gentle playmates for your younger children.
When getting another dog, you should check out this site: http://www.longliveyourdog.com/Careguide/CareBehavior/CareBehaviorCanine/GettingaSecondDog.aspx
When considering the gender, it depends on the dogs personalities and if your other dog is neutered, but it is a good idea to get a boy dog when you have a girl dog.

i think you should get a rescue puppy! although they are hard to come by (cause people adopt them so fast, ) its very rewarding and helpful for rescue groups and humane societies.
i dont think it matters which gender you get. most likely, the puppy from a shelter will be nuetered/spayed so you wont have to worry bout getting that done so expensively from a vet. oh yes, and they will have their shots done also (at least most of them i think).
just make sure that you read the information of that puppy like what breed and how large it might get, or if he/she is good with children..etc. you can also meet the puppy before you adopt with your children to see if you like him/her.
good luck!

Any puppy from the pound!! They always seem to get along with other dogs and have an underlying appreciation for taking them away from the pound. They will love you forever!

maybe a corgi mix, or a pit. dont get a chi! If your female is fixed than get a male, and make sure the male is also fixed before you introduce them on neutral territory. try looking at your local animal shelter or humane society before buying a dog. they have lots of animals looking for homes. you can also try www.petfinder.com
