If you want to know how high the range hood should be above the cooktop most companies give the dimensions on their web site in the installation manuals. I don't know what type of hood you have but I can give you an example from my Jenn Air island hood. Here is the link that will give you some idea of the distance between the cooktop / counter and the bottom of the hood.--go to pg 4 of this PDF file--

If you have a wall mount type the manufacturer will have the mounting heights for that also. If not call or email the manufactuer.
