Yes formatting your computer erases everything unless you have a D:/ drive to recover from.

If you still have the serial number of your disk Op system, (like an empty sleeve with the serial # written on the sleeve), you can contact Microsoft at the library or using a friends computer to access their web site for a free replacement.

Otherwise you can call around to computer repair company's to see if they have an OEM version you can have or buy...I know you said free! An OEM version does not need a key code to open and use the software. Many manufacturers use to use them at one time to pre-load onto their computers and run without the need for individual key codes.

Contact: http://www.freegeek.org and ask them for help. They may know where to go.

I was going to suggest Students and Teachers Recycling Used Computers, aka STRUT, but I can't seem to find a web site for them.

It may partially depend on what operating system you are using. Unless you are familiar with Linux!

When you format a drive any existing data or files will be erased completely. You will need to have a OS on a cd when you format it, but be careful because also when you format you delete drivers and unless you know who your drivers are from you won't be able to reinstall, like a video card, soundcard or wireless card if applicable. What disk are you looking for....

Formatting erases everything. No such thing as a free os cd. If you bought your computer from one of the big guys like dell, do you have a recovery partition on your computer (a D: partition)? If so, you can recover your system so it's just like when you bought it.

Formating the pc will make you lose everything. And yes you will need to get another cd of Windows.

Try ebay, its cheaper
