My dad was very successful and well off. He told me I had to pay for my own college. I will have it paid off this year-- only 8 years after graduation. I would tell him that if he can afford to live in a house for $500 a month then he can get student loans and pay for his own education. I had so many friends that dropped out or failed out since their parents were paying for the education and they did not appreciate it. Instead why don't you put money aside to help him with a down payment for his first house down the road since that is difficult for most children. I commuted 45 minutes to college and graduated with a BA in 3 years instead of 4. I also traveled in blizzard condition and worked nearly full time as well. I think it is a great time to get your son started on learning responsibility. I made good choices with my major and was able to use those classes to also fill basic class requirements. It went towards both. That helped me graduate early. I really respect my father for doing this but back then I was not thrilled. I am a better person because of the values he taught me. Helping me with my first house that we had built brand new at age 25 on 18 acres also helped. I had a good job from my education so I was on the right path. I hope maybe this information will help you.
