Creationists: why do you insist there was a canopy of water in the atmosphere?

Considering Genesis claims all the mountains were underwater, and that would require more than a mile of water above the current sea level, and this water was in the atmosphere before the flood, any idea what the air pressure would have to be to allow this?

Ever been a mile underwater? It's enough to squeeze the pulp out of you.

So why insist this is some kind of scientific fact when the truth is it could never have happened without wiping out all life on the planet -before- the Flood?

Oh well, there's a lot about science we don't know. For starters scientists have yet to discover that great unifying force of all things. They still don't know how gravity, lightning, tornadoes or stars like our sun work. They think gravity and mass go hand-in-hand and yet there is a lot of evidence out there that says that just isn't true.

Imagine a world where everything was a thousand times more dense, and our flesh would be as hard as rock compared to what it is now. Would we be able to tell the difference? Probably not. I think you're idea of the canopy of water is different than what might have really existed.
