That is a very good question. It seems particularly prevalent in Calvinistic protestantism. I find it amusing how they react to the catholic devotion to Mary, constantly accusing them of worshiping her.

I think there is a fear of women and their power over sexuality. Women are presented as temptresses and weak.

We Catholic and Orthodox Christians have the Trinity (Father ,Son and Holy Spirit). God is Eternal Spirit and is beyond sexual categories.

The word Trinity in many languages ,like Latin,Spanish,French,Italian,Greek and (Ithink) Arabic,is of feminine gender

.Also, for us the only Savior and Incarnate God is male but the Highest Creature, Mary of Nazareth," our tainted nature's solitary boast",is a woman.

Many,if not even the majority ,of our saints are female.

I don't feel that our theology and anthroplogy is in any way anti-female. I don't feel that the Bible when interpreted in the radical fullness of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Tradition puts women down but elevates, dignifies and glorifies women and men.

Partly due to a shift from matriarchal to patriarchal societies in early history.

There was a time when religion was female focused - woman being seen as mother: birth, beginning, life, energy.
But shifts in society led to the emergence of male focused religions - look at ancient Greek religion, who are the central figures? Men.

That's really it.

In the Gospel of the Essenes Jesus said,

"After this manner, therefore, pray to your Heavenly Father: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

"And after this manner pray to your Earthly Mother: Our Mother which art upon earth, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, and thy will be done in us, as it is in thee. As thou sendest every day thy angels, send them to us also. Forgive us our sins, as we atone all our sins against thee. And lead us not into sickness, but deliver us from all evil, for thine is the earth, the body, and the health. Amen.

And they all prayed together with Jesus to the Heavenly Father and to the Earthly Mother."
