Night crawlers are a large earthworm used for fish bait. I've used two different techniques to catch them (and I only got a penny apiece when I was a kid). You can mix a pound of dried powered mustard with a couple gallons of water and spray it on your lawn on a cool damp morning. Apparently, the mustard irritates the worm's skin and drives them to the surface. Alternatively, water the lawn and drive two metal stakes into the dirt, about 10 feet apart. Then -- using an old hand-cranked telephone generator -- electrify the two electrodes. The electric current drives the worms to the surface. As an enterprising teenager, I used the second method at random locations on our high school athletic field and caught enough night crawlers to keep myself in gasoline money for years (back when it was under 25 cents per gallon).

Big fat earthworms used for fishing. Called nightcrawlers because they emerge at night, but supposedly you can take a stick and tap it on the ground until the worms poke up out of the ground in daytime, no digging needed.

Theyre' big earthworms, who come out of their holes at night, and lay in the grass. Easily found if you go out in the yard at night, and shine a flashlight (electric torch, I think you call it).
The kids sell them to fishermen around here. Good bait.

Another term for worm. No one really uses it that much unless you fish. Some people don't even know what it means.
