Depends on what you want. New York is hard to beat for things to do 24 hours a day. It's a much larger city, so it has more restaurants, theaters, etc. On the other hand, San Francisco is a much cleaner city, has much nicer weather, and mellower people. And even if it only has 3,000 restaurants instead of 10,000, how many places can you eat?

I have semi lived in both.....I think San Francisco is neat and safer, however if you love the theater, and activities galor..then it's NYC ....They are both fabulously expensive for housing and food and taxi's so if you are getting a new job be sure to keep that in mind....
Me, I still live in NY BUT upstate where the living is easy and inexpensive , the views are breathtaking, if you can telecommute and hop a ride on Amtrak once a week to NYC come on up...!!!

I live in SF but love visiting NYC. SF is a cleaner city and the coast is more accessible. SF public transportation is decent. NYC wins the public transit chip. Traffic is not as bad in SF(I lived in LA most of my life so I know bad traffic). The climate is milder in SF. New York has extreems from snow to humid heat. SF stays between 61 and breaks 80 degrees F only a few days a year. Music, Art, Clubs and restaurants are fabulous in SF. Farmers Markets year round. Rent is cheaper in SF than NYC. There is rent control in SF. You are close to Mountains, Desert, Oceans, Forests, the wine country, and LA.

Personally I prefer SF. People are nicer, city is cleaner, they just instituted universal health care for the city. SF has cable cars and buses and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), NYC has the subway and soon to be hybrid taxis. NYC has better theater. SF is one of the greenest cities in the USA and is close to beach, mountains, lakes, rivers, snow, whatever you want.
Overall, I'd take SF.

Uh-oh...-You have a problem! They're BOTH cool places to live! Any chance you can "split the difference"- & move to Lincoln, Nebraska? :)
