my son is 4, has had 2 doses of motrin, and is currently being sponged down by his dad, and we are waiting for a call from the afterhours doc. He has a 104.3 degree fever and cries about his head hurting...is that fever too high to treat at home? Hes never had a fever over 101 before. what do i do?

To all of you who scared the living shi+ out of me: YOU SUCK! I freaked out, ran him into the ER, and the doc looked at him and said he has strep throat, gave some antibiotics and sent us home. Its not nice to scare people like that...dont answer unless you are qualified in some way to do so.

104.3 is very scary, but does NOT warrant an ER trip UNLESS it keeps climbing. Whoever said anything over 100 means ER has NO idea what they're talking about! Be persistent with the on call doc, call again and again, every 15 minutes or so, until you get a response from them- they will instruct you.

I say this having a similar situation with my then 4 yo who was at 104.2- no need for the ER, my Doc re-assured me, and they were right, but keep a close eye on him and get a hold of that Doc on call and see what they say (really, no one but a Doc should be telling you anyways).

Anything over 104 should be treated at the ER. I just went through this with my 3 yr old. Also try rotating the Motrin with Tylenol...if he just had Motrin he can have Tylenol in 2 hours then Motrin 2 hours after that...so every 2 hours you are giving him something....

TAKE HIM TO THE HOSPITAL!!! Any temp over 100 will start to fry his brain.

104 is way to high to treat at home. He has some sort of infection and needs to see a doctor.
