I know man, they're totally just a bunch of queers...and wiccans- what the hell is that- a bunch of wannabe witches...it's so funny how the youth today make up so much garbage just to try to express their 'individuality'- yeah right- in my day (and I'm only 31), you would get your azz kicked for saying you were a wiccan, or at least be laughed at so much you'd never say it again!...ahhh, the good old days- Now THAT was living!

First off, Wiccans are Pagans but not all Pagans are Wiccan. While there are a lot of different opinions on the subject, and not everyone would agree, Pagans are basically anyone who isn't Christian, Jewish or Muslim. Some (not all) people who are Pagan and/or Wiccan like to dress up in "garb" (Renessance (sp?) outfits) and go to festivals and such and pretend they are from a different era. Many Christians like to do this as well, however. It isn't limited to only Pagans. Pagans (and Wiccans) are generally more open to the idea of some things being possible as they are in the Lord of the Rings such as there being fairies and dragons and that magick really happens. I think it is because when someone has taken the time, effort and courage to become a Pagan/Wiccan we tend to care less about what people think of us and enjoy the creativity and freedom of "make believe" and so we can enjoy dressing up as characters without worrying about what the neighbors think. It's kind of like "geeks" dressing up in science fiction costumes.

There are many different types of Pagans. Wiccans are Pagans, but not all Pagans are Wiccans. The religion of Paganism is always nature-based, meaning you use respect and worship of the earth in your religion. Pagans also believe in Goddesses. Some Pagans believe that the Goddess is stronger and more important than the God, others believe they are equal. Most pagans also believe there is more than one God/Goddess. The Vikings and Native Americans were Pagans, as well as many different civilizations, so it's hard to pin down specific belief systems. I'm sure some people believe in dressing up as The Lord of the Rings characters, but that is not common in Paganism.

Paganism is a large umbrella that covers many belief systems. No, we don't believe Lord of the Rings is real, and the only time I've ever seen anyone dress up as a LOTR character was for a Halloween party.
Wiccans fall under the paganism umbrella, and I've never met a wiccan who dressed up as a character from LOTR.
Perhaps you are thinking of those who do medieval reinactments or go to medieval festivals? People from all faiths (and non-faith) like those.

Really? Do you really think that pagans (or wiccans) run around dressed up like characters from Lord of the Rings? Also, what on Earth does that have to do with what "pagans" believe?
I will not dignify the Lord of the Rings question with an answer but I will tell you this in answer to your question about pagan beliefs: Just for a bit of reference, the word pagan is a very general term that Christians often use to denote non-Christians or people who don't believe in a god or whose religion is polytheistic. Therefore, it is impossible to pinpoint one set of beliefs held by those who are called or who call themselves pagan. As for Wicca, most wiccans also do not ascribe to one set of beliefs either, but in general wiccans worship nature and believe that it is sacred and a source of power and energy. They are also often part of 'normal' society and as such choose to dress themselves accordingly in modern attire.

No, that's...umm.... I'm not sure what that's called. Probably "People who like to dress up like the characters from the Lord of the Rings..."

Pagans believe in anything not Christian. Since technically, that's what a pagan is. Not a Christian.

Wiccians follow the old religions, from pre-christian times. It depends on which one they follow. Unfortunately, the church destroyed any written knowledge of that time that wasn't Christian (and some of their own!!!) and most of it was oral tradition (The Church simply murdered those people) so a lot of their ritual and prayer is now based on conjecture along with careful research.

Few, if any, Pagans believe LotR is real, in a literal or figurative sense. However, many do find the stories to be very interesting - despite the plodding pace in certain sections, Tolkien was a pretty good author. While you can argue that there's Christian allegory in the stories, there's also a large amount of Nordic and Anglo-Saxon mythology woven into them. Prof. T was Christian, certainly, but he was also *very* learned in the realm of European mythology, and based a large amount of his stories off of that. Which, I suppose, is why so many find the stories popular - like Star Wars, they're modern-day retellings of the ancient myths that our ancestors told.

Wow. That's really all I can say at the moment. I am Wiccan, and Pagan. Lord of the Rings is not real. Cool if it were, but, sadly, hobbits are just vertically challenged people with hairy feet. Before you ask, Charmed isn't real either. I can't actually wave my hands and freeze (or blow up) people that are chasing me. I can't orb, blink, or shimmer. I can write spells, but they don't cause people to burst into flame, and they aren't always in rhyming couplet.

I believe -
Harm none, lest ye be harmed tenfold in return.
Respect oneself, respect others.
Have great respect for nature and the seasons, as they are the physical of the deities.

No. We don't think the Lord of the Rings is real. Yes, some of us do dress up as characters from it for fun. And some of us dress up as Star Wars, or Star Trek characters and a bunch of us like to dress up in various period costumes for fun. This has nothing to do with our religion.

Nobody this side of psychosis believes Lord of the Rings literally.
Wiccans are not Tolkein Fundamentalists and Tolkein was a devout R Catholic and saw theTrilogy of the Rings as a Christian redemption allegory.

The only people I've know who dress up as characters from LoR are Tolkein Groupies-you know, the way Trekkies dress up as Romulans, etc.

the word pagan actually encompasses a large sect of similar religions. but those religions dont all dress up like chars from lord of the rings, anymore than all christians dress like jesus. wierdos arent all one religion.

for the most part, many pagans are just like you, except their private religious choice. you would be suprised to see how many " regular joe's" you see walkin down the street believe in different gods or goddess's than you do.

trust me ive seen several " kooky" christians, like the ones that run around lookin like thier on fire, screaming the end is near!!, or spasming in church.

by the way wiccans fall under the pagan category.
