I'm just curious. In some aspects of the movie, he seemed mormon. In other aspects, he didn't.

The character Napoleon IS a Mormon without a doubt. I grew up as a Mormon in Idaho, so to me it's pretty obvious, but here's how I know for sure:
Napoleon wears a Ricks College shirt in the movie (a scene in the cafeteria). Ricks College is a Mormon college in Idaho. Recently, it was changed to a 4-year university, and now the name of it is "BYU Idaho."
The writers, Jared and Jerusha Hess, are both Mormons. John Heder, the actor is a Mormon.
Mormon kids don't swear, and they commonly use the "pseudo" curse words Napoleon uses such as "frick," "gosh," "dang," etc. I grew up saying these words.

I don't know that the character was a Mormon. The actor Graduated from BYU film school as did Aaron Eckhart (not a Mormon).
The man who played the principal is the head of the BYU Film Dept.
Others that came from BYU film school include
Neil Labute (teacher not a student) : "In the Company of Men"
Blair True -- Director
Sterling Van Wagonen (student -- then teacher)
many others -- most not worth mentioning

The actor John Heder is, and some of the people who made that film are, but I don't think his character is meant to be.

Pure and simple genius. I could care less what religion that kid is supposed to be... that movie is like a litmus test for seeing who has a sense of humor and who doesn't.
