0.5mg per kg of body weight which equals about 10mg of benadryl. Yes dogs can take benadryl without any problem.
P.S.
Benadryl works on any allergic reaction, it does not matter if the cause is food or something else. When the body has an allergic reaction it releases histamines which causes the hives, itching, and other ill effects. Benadryl is an antihistamine medicine, so it prevents the body from releasing histamine making you feel better.

my JRTerrier had a really BAD case of fleas last summer, he weighs almost 30 lbs, and the Vet said he could take a 25 mg tablet of Benedryl..he suggested buying the generic version at wal-mart....it is the Equate brand...diphenhydramine hydrochloride 25 mg Antihistamine Allergy tablets....100 tablets..25 mg is about $ 4.00 or less in a little bottle with a red label...works as well as the brand name !!! he told me to buy it there because he could not buy it as reasonably priced himself !!!.......also, if your dog has terrible food allergies, consider Canidae, dry dog food, all life stages...i have read many yahoo answer people write about food problems and allergies with their dogs that went away when they switched to Canidae, because its an all natural, and all human grade ingredients dry dog food, and its reasonably priced and quite affordable...Check Canidae.com for more information about their products and their money back guarantee, if you are unhappy for any reason !!! ..if i can be of further help, email me !! good luck to y'all !!!...PS the 25 mg tablet worked well for my JRT, and we switched our 2 dogs to Canidae, after all the recalls started, and they love it !! check out Canidae at Canidae.com !!!

Has your vet told you to give the dog Benadryl? If not, do NOT give her Benadryl . You should never give an animal a drug used by humans unless specifically advised to by a vet.
Also, it is my understanding that Benadryl is for hayfever type allergies, not food allergies.
You must check this out with your vet.

The right dosage of Benedryl is the amount the VET TELLS YOU to give NOT what people on the net tell you to give!!! It is also illegal for anyone even a licensed vet or tech to give you dosage of medications without giving your pet a hands on exam and knowing it's medical history..as for the food allergy you need to get tests done to see exactly what foods she is allergic to and eliminate them from her diet..

Before giving your dog any medicine, you should call your vet.
Many human medicines are poison to animals (aspirin for one) and could kill them. If your dog is having problems, you should do is to take her to the vet, immediately, that way, you know exactly what is wrong, and you know how to fix it.
