I just bought some beef bones for my dogs, but they seem REALLY hard and I'm worried about their teeth breaking or chipping. Have any of you given beef bones to your dogs, and what is your opinion of them?

Sterilized beef bones are appropriate for your dog. Make sure you check them often to see that there are no sharp edges or breaks in them. Once they do have a flaw or get to a small size throw them out.

Sounds like a wreck bone to me. Are they weight bearing bones? If so, I would toss them out. I do not feed beef bones. They are very hard, and I do not feed cooked bones. Pork rib bones are nice recreational bones. I get a big bag from the butcher cut to appropriate size for my dogs for 40 cents. Whole ox tails also provide my dogs with a good work out safely. I fed beef ribs once, but I felt very anxious the whole time they ate, so I never fed those again.

Yes, I seen dogs that have broken teeth on beef bones. One dog broke its tooth, the owner did not notice, the site abscessed and the infection travel in the blood stream to the dogs heart and infected that. The dog almost, but fortunately did not, die. the bones are just recreational and not needed for any nutritional purpose. Take a chance or not, it is up to you.

They are good as long as they are bigger than your dog can swallow... We have a large breed dog Rottie and she loves her bones.. We used to give her raw hide, but she would destroy a monster bone in a couple hours and she would get sick or choke... The grocery store beef/shank bones are cheap and she loves them.. Every once inawhile I boil it on the stove to keep it well-from getting everything gross.. Good luck

I never give my dogs any cooked bones. They are dry and can split with a sharpness that can cut your dog up. I do give my dogs raw bones especially raw chicken wings (meat intact) Raw bones are softer and help keep your dog's teeth clean.

my dog eats ham bones all the time...

...she has never had a broken tooth or anything (just occasional diareah)

dog's teeth are very strong and they should be ok from chewing on a bone (as long as its not a chicken one!)

They're fine. They'll give your dogs a real workout and get rid of the tartar.
