The best way to study for the exam is to read the New York Times and listen to "All Things Considered" for a year. Seriously, these two are the best sources of detailed, in-depth information on current events, history, economics, commerce, culture, etc.

It worked for me.

The best advice I heard someone give for preparing the foreign service exam came from an old deputy chief of mission--get a subscription to the Economist and read every article each week, even the boring ones.
