Check the documentation for your scanner. It might already come with Scan to Text capability.

If you wish to scan the document then edit the wording etc you need to scan using TWAIN software, mine came with the scanner. This converts the scanned image into an editable document.
if you just wish to import the image to a word document as a picture and insert it into your document just open up word and choose "insert" then choose "from scanner". The imported image is not however editable.
The OCR software answer from DIRK N is probable the most helpful

A scanned document will be in one of the photo formats e.g. jpg , bmp etc. Open up Word, go to Insert> Image> From file and browse to the location of the image. Click on it and Voila! your image is now a part of the Word document.
